Staff received an email yesterday revealing 500 officials will be moved to the new Glasgow office by 2024.

The announcement comes only days after it was revealed other departments, including the Treasury, will move staff to cities around the country....

...The Cabinet Office said: ‘Decision- makers should be close to the people they serve.

‘That’s why we’ve committed to relocating civil service roles out of central London...'

Are you suggesting: "Relocating... out of the blast-zone?"

Or "... to be nearer to the haggis?"

Regards,

I believe this is essentially what President Trump wanted to do to break up the Washington D.C. monopoly. Spread the various agencies around the country, especially to areas that are a natural fit (Interior in Denver or Salt Lake City, for example). Another reason the Swamp wanted him gone.

Exactly, agriculture to mid-west, forestry to Colorado, etc. Trump was successful in moving a few headquarters.

Nothing new about this. Successive governments over the last 20 years or so have had ambitious plans to move civil service departments into the regions. Although some of it has actually happened (such as DHSS departments to Belfast, DVLA to Swansea etc) the plans nearly always get whittled down to small token movements, simply because of the passive resistance of the Civil Service itself - and civil servants are very good at passive resistance.

More recently the possibility has been mooted of moving Parliament itself outside London - but that's driven by the urgent need for a major refit of the Westminster Parliament buildings, which are crumbling.
