The population of China right now is 1,443,145,867 so if they lose 500 million, they will still have nearly 950 million people. That’ll put them behind India. But on the other hand, there will be less constraints imposed due to overpopulation.

Exactly
“The population of China right now is 1,443,145,867 so if they lose 500 million, they will still have nearly 950 million people.”
950 million people standing around in a radioactive rubble, with zero food, infrastructure, dams breaching even if they aren’t hit, no military, or even the ability to make it to the next town without walking. So that’s not the same as 950 million people in a functioning nation.
In round numbers, let's say out of 1.5 billion that 500 billion were gone via nuclear retaliation. That 1/3 gone represents the majority of the economic and political capability of the nation. I don't think this assumption is far fetched.
Would this nation cease to exist as a coherent entity?

When our politicians and state department set up WW3, it most likely will be a non nuclear war. In WW2 two ruthless leaders on the Eastern Front, sent their armies into a meat grinder. Both leaders were familiar with the technology used in WW1, yet they declined to use chemical and biological weapons on the battle fields of Eurasia.
The leaders I’m talking about were Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler.
The weapons that will gain attention in the next 15 to 25 years(my prediction for the next “big one”) will be a variety of conventional missiles, that will terrorize people, air travel, sea travel, and cities.
That fat kid in N. Korea has good missiles. Russia and China missiles are even better.(plus Russia & China are low cost producers unlike are inflated military contractors)
