Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt's surprise retirement announcement Monday adds his name to a growing list of GOP establishment politicians who no longer recognize the party they represent and have decided to walk away rather than face the peril of losing their career at the hands of a Donald Trump-inspired base that views them a insufficiently loyal to the cause.
To date, five Republicans senators -- Blunt, Richard Shelby (Alabama), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania) and Rob Portman (Ohio) -- have all announced that they will not seek another term next November. It's not a coincidence that all five are considered remnants of the Republican Party of George W. Bush and have struggled to adjust to the new Trump-led GOP.
"The rash of GOP retirements, likely to avoid Trump madness in the primaries, shows you Trump still isn't done destroying the party," tweeted conservative commentator (and CNN contributor) Amanda Carpenter after Blunt's retirement announcement. "Onwards we go."
The trend is hard to dispute.
Blunt, prior to Monday morning, was not seen as someone even considering not running again. He had spent a lifetime in politics -- including a stint in House leadership -- and is a close ally of Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky). And with the Republican trend in Missouri, Blunt's path in a general election in 2020 is probably clearer than in either of his past two Senate bids.
But Blunt isn't a Trumper. In the wake of the January 6 US Capitol riot, Blunt said that Trump had been "clearly reckless" although he insisted, wrongly in retrospect, that "the President touched the hot stove on Wednesday and is unlikely to touch it again."

They chose....poorly.
In what universe is Amanda Carpenter a conservative?
saves them the embarrassment of getting primary-ed out of office, feh...
Well, Blunt is 71, Shelby 86. Portman 65, Burr 65.
All will be past normal retirement age in two years.
Maybe, at least some, really want to retire!
Did you ever consider that some people just want to retire, when they reach certain age?
The senate term is 6 years. Blunt would be older at the end of his next term than Resident Bidet is nowadays.
Rinos hitting the eject button. Reminds me of the Arab pilots who did the same once they saw an Israeli radar lock from an F15.
“progressives” have never prevailed in a “clean election”
RINO’s that are worthless.
Real republican conservative or primary them.
AGE MATTERS...and these politicians need to vote for TERM LIMITS...even Sen. Blunts is wasted away...as for Pat Toomey, he saw the writing on the wall and knows he would never get re elected in PA. again...
Time for NEW candidates to get out and about and make themselves familiar with voters. Time for DJT to decide we need a new Party and the GOP IS DEAD and needs replaced by new people, new blood, and new fights...get with if deplorables...wake up...let's roll...
It’s always refreshing when Democrat/leftist/liberal media types try to advise Republicans and conservatives on what’s in our best interest.
People who push for the repeal of the 17th Amendment act as if it would be a magical elixer to restore Constitutional checks and balances.
I do not believe it would be.
State legislatures may well be easier to bribe/corrupt than state voting populations.
Senators still represent the entire state, instead of a voting district.
A Senator from Rhode Island still has as much power as a Senator from California.
A major reason for the 17th Amendment was the high level of corruption among Senators.
It is something to consider.
The big problem with the state voter selecting Senators is the enormous influence of the Progressive Media and the Tech Oligarchs.
They’ve all had a good talking to. Look for Mitt to announce soon.
These jacka$$ traitors to the party must have paid gigs for the rats waiting in the wings!
I was reading back sometime near 1996 that the Republican party was hoping to get enough immigrants into the south because they hated pandering to southern conservatives to get their votes. They do not like their voters is true.
no good UniPartian likes deplorables..
Now for McConnell.
I suspect that you (hopefully) understand that there will not be an honest election for the foreseeable future.
‘22, ‘24, you’re kidding, right ?
Think about it. Bush was first elected 20 years ago. That would be like comparing Eisenhower era politicians (1961 when he left office) to Reagan era politicians (1981 when he assumed office). 20 years is a long time in politics. Good riddance to all the Bush era politicians.
Bad journalism as usual. They don’t “represent the Republican party” idiots. They represent states and districts.
Establishment Junk!
