In a lab dubbed the “room of doom” at an Edgewater research center, scientists learned that climate change is no friend to lovers of meaty oysters.
A new study by the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center shows that oysters stressed by low dissolved oxygen and warm water early in life grow thicker shells and less meat, the white, briny culinary delight the bivalve is harvested for.
The warmer water is, the less dissolved oxygen it holds, the substance fish, oysters, crabs and underwater plants use to breathe.
In other words, oysters about half the normal size.
SERC Scientist Emeritus Denise Breitburg said climate change has been the driving factor in the Chesapeake Bay’s low oxygen, or hypoxia, for the past 30 years.
Breitburg said the research showed that even for something thought to be well-understood, like oysters, there is still a lot unknown.
“The problem is more complex than we were thinking,” she said.

Say it ain’t so!!!
How much is due to pollution of the Chesapeake Bay due to runoff of fertilizer, effluent from waste treatment plants, and storm water drainage from highways. The population of the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area has exploded with the growth of the federal government in the 80 years since WWII. Perhaps the answer to saving the Chesapeake Bay is to dramatically shrink the size of government which will result in people leaving the DC area and dispersing across the country. With a smaller population dumping poorly treated waste into the Chesapeake Bay, the ecosystem can recover.
Or, disease devastated the oyster population and they are currently reseeding the bay with a new oyster population. As someone here, the news and reality are somewhat different that the lies of the Left:

I remember such warnings from fifty years ago. Yawn.
The size of the oysters, crabs and fish has more to do with overfishing than anything else. Industrial seafood processors don’t care how big they are, they demand and get volume.
Wouldn’t farm runoff be more likely to cause these conditions (hypoxia), and not global warming? I’m pretty sure there’s a huge dead zone in the Gulf near the mouth of the Mississippi precisely because of farm runoff.
“overfishing”
Dead on. Liberals attribute everything to climate.
You mean, back when oysters were “well understood”, as the article claims (without evidence)?
If global warming were science, there would be a lot of papers showing its deleterious effects, and also some (but fewer) showing its beneficial effects. And then scientists would say: look the harms of global warming outweigh the benefits: we need to do something.
But take anything good that you can think of (like oysters) and google “Gloabl warming impact on ... “ and you’ll find paper showing that global warming makes that thing smaller and more rare. On the other hand take anything bad (hurricanes) and google that and you’ll find global warming makes them bigger and more common.
So lots of papers get published showing the harms and none showing the benefits. That’s not a science that’s an orthodoxy, a pseudo religion.
And a religion may be true or false, but whether it’s true or false, you’ll find “consensus” around it.
Family tradition here for years has been a box of James River oysters during the Thanksgiving holidays. Nothing size wise has changed and doubt it will.
It would be interesting to see if oysters harvested on the eastern shore differ from those on the much more developed western shore. Although there is lots of farming on the eastern side the waters tend to be clearer and saltier (due to the Coriolis Force).
There’s no question that the areas surrounding DC have undergone explosive development. The Chesapeake Bay watershed is changing rapidly. In fact, Maryland’s eastern shore is starting to build up as people flee the congestion, crime and corruption plaguing the western side which is dominated by liberal politics. The eastern shore is far more conservative.
My guess these were lab grown.
“The warmer water is, the less dissolved oxygen it holds.” No doubt. Guess what else it holds less of... dissolved CO2. This is why the hoax about “ocean acidification” is just that. You can’t have warming seas without increased out gassing of CO2, which counters the scare story about the ocean turning into acid.
I’m 75 years of age. I’ve been on the Bay since I was 5. If global warming, ice cap and glacier melting is true, why have I seen no sign of this anywhere in the Chesapeake? There’s been no changes at any of the markers, inlets, landings, docks, beaches or other places. From the Nansmond to the Susquehanna, from Richmond to Chincoteague the only cranes are those brought on by natural tides. Those so-called experts aren’t out here living it.
Yes there is. Every year the papers do a big story on the size of the “dead zone”...
Haven’t seen anything this year but haven’t looked either.
It’s crawfish season now !
Use a thicker batter...or double dip them.
Laughable.
Go talk to da farmers wit deir fertilizer runoff, boiiiiii.
Global Warming PING!
If you give a hammer to a child, everything becomes a nail.
Obviously Mother Nature is not on board with the current political climate, otherwise all this climate change would stop.
Or maybe would could get the Xiden administration to repeal the laws of nature.
