I sat next to a guy on a plane, I think late 2017, and he lived in Arizona just a few miles from the border. He told me that it wasn’t true that there was no fence on the border, and showed me a picture of what looked like chicken coop fence about 4 feet high. He didn’t get it, that they don’t come over to invade his tiny town.

“Bush probably would have been able to get the wall built right after 9-11.”

Exactly right. He had the political capital to build a wall, hunt down and remove visa overstayers, round up and remove illegals, and overhaul our immigration system to one based on merit.

Instead of doing those things, he left the border wide open, pushed amnesty multiple times, increased immigration from muslim countries, and gave us the “Patriot Act.”

Jorge was terrible in terms of national sovereignty.

I was in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in 2019 where a fence similar to what you described was being replaced by Trump’s 30 foot tall steel wall. Very impressive. Early in this century a park ranger was killed by illegals and use of the park by US citizens was restricted due to the human smuggling, narcotics trafficking and other crime in the park associated with illegal crossing of the boarder.

During the Trump era I read several “news” accounts that Trump wasn’t constructing a new wall. As I recall one of the reason Ann Coulter split with Trump was his alleged failure to build the wall. However, from what I saw a very impressive and effective structure was being built to replace a very light weight 4 foot fence with 4 strands of barbed wire which could easily be rendered ineffective with wire cutters or simply pushed over.

Few Americans have been to the border to see how poorly the country is “protected” by our federal government. Trump secured much of the border with a strong barrier. However, he didn’t finish the job and the work has been stopped. Likely as the cartels and human traffickers punch holes in parts of Trump’s wall over the next few years, the current administration will not make repairs. Even if there is a GOP president in 2024, unless Trump is reelected, I doubt a Jeb Bush, Nikki Haley, Linsday Graham, or other GOP establishment president elected in 2024 will do anything to build on what Trump started.

By 2019 the wall should have been done. This is what happens when you start three years in, something that could and should have been started in week one. What, was he afraid it would incite his critics? The fallout from acting unilaterally could not have possibly made things any worse for him. Tax cuts could’ve been passed by a monkey with an R next to his name, Trump was supposed to be different.

“What, was he afraid it would incite his critics?”

Unlike other presidents, Trump did not have key appointments vetted and ready to appoint the day after the election. Instead he spent the 2 1/2 months before inauguration doing speed interviews. Many of his key cabinet nominees (Tillerson, Mattis are most noteworthy) Trump decided on after a one hour get acquainted meeting. Instead of a team in place, ready to do battle, on inauguration day he was battling McConnell to get nominees through and also still trying to find people to fill positions. He ended up filling most with GOP political operatives who were invested in the DC Swamp, not Trump’s agenda.

Trump was also getting bad advice from Ryan and McConnell who were doing everything they could behind the scenes to sabotage his key initiatives like the wall. Likely the first year they told him they’d get the wall approved through the appropriations process and were warning him against unilateral action. By the time he realized they had no intention of enacting his programs, a year was essentially gone.

I admire Trump for what he was able to accomplish. However his biggest failure, once he decided to run, was to put together a high energy team of like minded people to fill the appointed positions in the bureaucracy to help him fight for the agenda. Trump was primarily a one man show against a bureaucracy of hundreds of thousands as well as a GOP Congress totally invested in the status quo. One man falling into a snake pit may kill a few snakes before they strike him but he will eventually be taken down by thousands of bites.

Something tells me that some of those Democrat politicians are getting their share in cartel paybacks. They have to be.

The DC rats fight like hell for those that give them money.

Cartels, Planned parenthood, labor unions.

How much did McConnel play in assisting President Trumps nominees? Such as the supreme court nominees?
