The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have recommended Catholics get the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer or Moderna over Johnson & Johnson, if possible, because the latter adenovirus vector vaccine was developed with the help of abortion-derived cell lines.
In a statement released on March 2, Bishop Kevin Rhoades, chairman of the conference’s Committee on Doctrine, and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, chairman of the conference’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities, encouraged Catholics to avoid getting the latest adenovirus vector COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson if alternatives are available.

The active rna type mechanism of the first two vaccines has never before been tried in any large scale vaccination program. I for one will get one of the vaccines that use normal approach.

I understand the issue, except pharmaceutical companies frequently use fetal tissue when developing vaccines and other medications. Do any of us know whether or not that pertains to the current medications we take? And who hasn’t taken the polio vaccine? I understand it was developed using fetal tissue. So where do we draw the line?
You draw the line on doing nothing to encourage the murder of unborn babies, that is, if you are a Christian, and/or Pro-Life.
Otherwise, the profession of Christianity, or even being Pro-Life is worthless.
I watched a video of a priest who does vaccine research himself. He said it is morally ok to take the vaccines because they are developed on a cellular line taken from aborted fetal cells a long time ago. He said it’s like walking on a road in Italy which was once built by slaves. By walking on it you aren’t approving of slavery.

Fetal cell lines are not the same as fetal tissue. Fetal cell lines are cells that grow in a laboratory. They descend from cells taken from elective abortions in the 1970s and 1980s. Those individual cells from the 1970s and 1980s have since multiplied into many new cells over the past four or five decades, creating fetal cell lines. Current fetal cell lines are thousands of generations removed from the original fetal tissue. They do not contain any tissue from a fetus.
Vaccine makers may use these fetal cell lines in any of the following three stages of vaccine development:
Development: Identifying what works
Confirmation: Making sure it works
Production: Manufacturing the formula that works
Neither the Pfizer nor Moderna vaccines used fetal cell lines during the development or production phases. (So, no fetal cell lines were used to manufacture the vaccine, and they are not inside the injection you receive from your doctor). However, both companies used the fetal cell line HEK 293 in the confirmation phase to ensure the vaccines work. All HEK 293 cells are descended from tissue taken from a 1973 elective abortion that took place in the Netherlands. However, I read that HEK 293 may have not been derived from fetal cells, because so many other types of cells were involved in the experimental cloning process.
Several vaccines on the U.S. vaccination schedule are made in cells from the HEK 293 cell line. They include vaccines against rubella, hepatitis A, and chicken pox. They have also been used to make approved drugs against diseases including hemophilia, rheumatoid arthritis, and cystic fibrosis.
PER.C6, is a proprietary cell line owned by Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, developed from retinal cells from an 18-week-old fetus aborted in 1985. Both cell lines were developed in the lab of molecular biologist Alex van der Eb at Leiden University. In the adenovirus vector vaccines, like the one approved for use by Johnson & Jonson, the human fetal cells are used as miniature “factories” to generate vast quantities of adenoviruses, disabled so that they cannot replicate, that are used as vehicles to ferry genes from the novel coronavirus (the Spike Protein) that causes COVID-19. When the adenoviruses are given as a vaccine, recipients’ cells begin to produce proteins from the coronavirus, hopefully triggering a protective immune response.
To reject the use of vaccines which took billions of dollars to produce because of ethical symbolism is not worth the cost either in dollars or the cost of life.
If you are thinking that getting infected with the virus, like President Trump, that it would give you immunity, I am not sure that is something you want to do. You may have the gene that causes your immune system to over react, causing that death causing cytokine storm. So, basically, you are playing Russian roulette.
In the mean time, during the early stages of your infection, you are bringing the infection home to infect others who live with you. What if that was your mother? How will you protect your mother--those you love--as you feel that sore throat coming on?
And then, there are those expensive funeral costs--all because you played Russian roulette.
