I wonder what Texans with EV’s did when the lights went out?
They flew to Cancun?
Do EVs even run in extreme cold?
EV can charge at home from solar panels on the roof if the grid is down. All the gas pumps in a 5 mile area where the power was down also could not pump fuel in the tanks without electricity to run the submerged pumps. Not a single one had a back up diesel generator to keep the pumps on when the grid was down. In addition the gas pumps that had electricity were all out of fuel as the demand spiked and people filled tanks for generators I saw people filling 40 to 50 gallons worth of tanks for generators. My solar panels even on the darkest overcast day still managed to make 1200 watts an hour polycrystalline silicon panels make power under ANY light not just direct sun. In full sun my panels make 15 kilowatts. We lost the grid for 36 hours straight and again for another 12. During the day we had the hosie at 83 degrees all powered by the panels on the roof and at night I ran the whole house generac for two hours just to keep the freezers and fridges from spoiling the thermal mass was enough to.cool from.83 down to the low 70s in the morning and then the sun came back and the heat pumps turned back on solar powered. I couldn’t have been happier with my panels all my neighbors are getting them installed it was the best possible testimonial to see my home well lit and warm while they.shivered.
Diesel backup, baby!
