New York City has been blighted by graffiti leaving some areas of the Big Apple 'looking like war zones' reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s, leading to a barrage of vandalism complaints.
As part of a major clean-up operation announced on Wednesday, NYPD officers will examine graffiti tags for clues about gang activity in the city after the department said it had received over 6,000 complaints in 2020 alone.
The explosion of graffiti has left parts of New York City looking like it did in the 70s and 80s, before CCTV cameras acted as a deterrent and clean-up initiatives were implemented by mayors Michael Bloomberg and Rudi Giuliani.

Chop off their hand when caught.
I’m seriously starting to admire the taliban and china how they deal with crime.
I HATE “graffiti artists”.
Thanks to lockdowns, we are quite literally living in a real life enactment of those popular dystopian future movies.
But like in all of those movies, there are guys like me that moved out to the country and create our own little piece of actual civilization. They will end too, but life is a mist.
Clean it up?! And then clean it again? This isn’t going to stop. No prosecutions means the terrorist policy of destroying everything continues. Fools.
The General Dinkins era returns.
Well, New Yorkers.. remember.. you wanted this.
Given the new technology that makes big central locations unnecessary and obsolete and the chronic tolerance of bizarre lawlessness, New York City will never return to “normal”. No amount of Federal aid or subsidy will restore it. Decent, rational people have left or are leaving.
Cue Studio 54 disco music.
I remember some elite opinion makers complaining how they missed the days of gritty NYC. I guess this is a case of being careful of what you wish for.
YES!!! The memories.....
Are the subway train exteriors now looking like the way they did in the “Welcome Back Kotter” intro?
The New York Police Department announced that offending Property Owners WILL BE FOUND, cited, arrested, fined and summarily executed if necessary.
Most of the stores look closed and probably out of business so they’ve just been sucked up into what’s called the liberal utopia.
Right. Perhaps the most amusing line in the article is this one: “NYPD officers will examine graffiti tags for clues about gang activity...”. Clues? Just will could the NYPD do with those clues? Maybe they could make a New York version of the classic board game.
Colonel Mustard in the alley with a spray can...
I was a NYC graffiti artist in the early 70’s. My “pieces” were on trains across several train lines. There was both danger and excitement sneaking into a train yard, and creating your work of art. Early Sunday morning was my time. I felt like I owned the train yard.
What I didn’t do was tag stuff with markers. It was ugly, destructive and showed a total lack of respect for peoples property. Going into an empty train car and tagging it was in my mind disgusting.
I was a kid and I knew it was wrong. The one time I got caught I spent a weekend cleaning walls in the Bronx. Two of the people watching us, grabbed me, took me away from the group and shaved my head. I deserved it. When I got home, it was my fathers turn to correct my behavior. That wasn’t pretty. I learned an important lesson.
I’ve noticed more and more on the train cars passing through our area.
One of my personal Top Ten movies.
Where’s a Bronson when we need him?
