CO2 pollution bounces back, climate goals at risk: IEA

Paris (AFP) -- Global CO2 emissions have returned to pre-pandemic levels and then some, threatening to put climate treaty targets for capping global warming out of reach, the International Energy Agency said Tuesday.

Energy-related emissions were two percent higher in December 2020 than in the same month a year earlier, driven by economic recovery and a lack of clean energy policies, the IEA said in a report.

"The rebound in global carbon emissions toward the end of last year is a stark warning that not enough is being done to accelerate clean energy transitions worldwide," IEA executive director Fatih Birol said in a statement.

A year ago, the intergovernmental agency called on governments to put clean energy at the heart of economic stimulus plans, but the appeal appears to have fallen on deaf ears for the most part.

"Our numbers show we are returning to carbon-intensive business-as-usual," Birol said.

These lefties are insane aren’t they. It’s like calling oxygen “pollution”. What ticks me off about articles like this is it’s “hit and run”. They publish this crap and refuse to allow any rebuttal, any comments on the page.

I really find it hard to believe that emissions in the US and Europe are higher than pre-pandemic. Are all the increases happening in India and China? ie nothing we do here will change this

Quit buying off on their premise that CO2 is both a pollutant, which is NOT, and current atmospheric levels of CO2 are dangerous.

I’m not buying off on anything. CO2 emissions are harmless and part of natural processes. It is NOT pollution. That said, the amount being created can be measured. My assertion is that there was not more created in 2020 than in 2019 as the article claimed. At least in the Boston area traffic is way below normal levels. Vast numbers of people are working from home now and not commuting 2-3 hrs a day. I’m sure the same is true in the other big metro areas run by lefties.

In the summer of 2020,when Los Angeles was virtually shut down, the smog was the worst since late 60’s.
