It's not really helpful when you demand that people refrain from wearing masks, with some pretty plausible reasoning why it could make one more susceptible to infection, then the next week demand that everyone wear a mask in public, to the point that several states use their authority to mandate it. And then state that the plain cloth mask you were pooh-poohing the week before will do just fine now.

Credibility counts, Dr. Fauci. You lost yours a long time ago with a lot of free-thinking Americans.

The vaccine makers say they can ‘zip’ adjustments for new variants into their existing vaccines; about a month lead-time for re-work. This was widely publicized when the Brazilian and So. African variants were discovered circulating.

Oxford vaccine is effective against So.African/Nigerian B.1.1.7 variant but not approved in the US although exclusive use in UK.

There are two or three more vaccines in the pipeline: AstraZenica and Novavax and one other I forget. Metrics for success are rate of hospitalizations post-vaccine infections rather than absolute protection from re-infection.

A whole lot of the world is nowhere near being vaccinated. As unvaccinated people get infected, the virus mutates just like it’s supposed to do in a situation where there are few natural defenses - it gets weaker or stronger. The now-buffed out mutated virus, the ‘variant’, can compromise those who have already recovered from infection. That is, the natural antibodies are meant for a now-wimpy version and may not be strong enough to fight off the Green Hulk virus. The more contageous variants are at 20-30% of test results in some areas; when it gets to 50%, we’ll see a surge of infected/deaths, in those that aren’t vaccinated. And the second infection will be worse. Sweden has also released a study that claims Covid has crossed the placenta infecting the unborn. These are all reasons to get vaccinated and toss that nasty, germ-filled mask.

The messaging from the admin has been inconsistent. They have done little to assauge people’s fears over the novel vaccines and won’t shut Fauci up. Biden’s people were out in full force pre-election badmouthing the vaccines were dangerous, (although there is live video of both the P and VP getting vaccinated on Dec 21). They complained no plan was in place,(there was) and no oversight (wrong again); that the vaccines would cause all kinds of problems (they haven’t). But that now they have complete control of manufacturing and distribution everything will be fine - even though nothing has changed except a very stupid delay while they discussed needle size, who is and is not ‘essential’ and ‘racial equity’ as the compromised continue to die.

In surveys, it’s averaging about 20% ‘no, not getting it.’ South Dakota is about 22%. This isn’t helped by the incoming admin lying with their claim of having to ‘start from scratch’, that distribution was chaotic, with ‘no stockpile’ of what everyone knows is a novel, never before, vaccine, as if it were pennicillin stockpiles that were missing. What an insult to the military who had distributed innoculation supplies months ago in anticipation of vaccine approval. And on yet another stage, are more admin people with their cheer-leading pompoms, promising, first 100 days, by Spring, by Summer, by April, by Fall...., with little else to say.

And on the far side of the stage, Fauci preens before daily cameras, acting like vaccines haven’t even been developed. He encourages masks, double masks, triple masks, isolation of family and friends, bankruptcy of businesses across the nation, but gives us no metrics on vaccination data or what mutants are circulating where and specific actions being taken - no red meat people can use to make informed decisions. It’s like he’s trapped in a time warp - applying what he should have done during the AIDs epidemic to this pandemic thinking they are the same and hoping for better results.
