Seems strange that the rectum is a place that absorbs substances since it is the staging area for material whose useful ingredients have been extracted earlier.
Water is extracted toward the end of the digestive cycle , Along with the water other substances are also absorbed such as electrolytes. That is why diarrhea can impair and kill you. You heard of the phrase “blowing smoke up your *ss”. People knew tobacco was a strong stimulant so they literally blew smoke up peoples rear ends. It didn’t work hence the term is still in use today.
I recall some doctor and his family stranded on an island did this to survive. Small puddles of muddy water with no water filter. Smart guy.
