I remember when AIDS first exploded in the 80s. There was a rush to come up with a diagnostic test. The United States came up with the first test but the French refused to accept it based on national pride. The Pasteur Institute was working on their own version. Because of this delay thousands of French citizens were unnecessarily exposed to the virus through blood transfusions.
