“The Spanish War and other events in 1936–37, turned the scale. Thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written directly or indirectly against totalitarianism and for Democratic Socialism as I understand it.”
Totalitarians move around. They always select the path of least resistance, affording the most power the fastest. In Orwell’s time Communism and Fascism were the most attractive ideologies to tyrants. They still are but are rebranded variously as democratic socialism due to the other two being well-known venues for tyranny.
I’m pretty sure contemporary Orwells are similarly against democratic socialists. You can tune in to them daily on talk radio. They are creative, insightful, entertaining and decidedly against tyranny.
