“Markley, VanCamp and Robbins,”
I just rolls off of the tongue.
I used to listen to AM radio religiously on my commute. Then I got a smart phone and realized I could listen to Tucker, Laura, etc. on Youtube on mny way to and from work. And of course with google maps there is no need for traffic reports - I know what’s going on before they do. Add to that my total lack of interest in pro or college sports and, well, I haven’t turned on an AM radio in years.
Heck, my wife even listened to Rush on her smart phone.
It just may be that the end of Rush may bring in the end of AM radio. Even the sporting events can be heard on your smart phone.
Hey, you’re mentioned in this article.
Hoping Mark Steyn takes on the gig permanently
I worked out of my home for many of the rush years. I listened to parts of the broadcasts almost daily. The revolving hosts do nothing for me
As it says stations owned by iHeart may well wind up carrying whatever successor Premiere (iHeart’s syndication arm) puts out. That is probably 3 months from now as Premiere has indicated it will take that long to officially appoint a successor.
In Boston iHeart carries Rush on WXKS 1200 while their WRKO 680 has the Grace Curley show, done by the Howie Carr Radio network (Howie’s 3-7 pm show airs on some 25 stations in the Northeast including WRKO; Grace is on about 4). WRKO morning man Jeff Kuhner has been suggested as a possibility in the Rush slot but despite saying “we’re going national baby!” for about 6 years now, he is still only on WRKO. But who knows? Kuhner had filled in on the Savage and Levin shows nationally.
Carr himself may be happy staying where he is an he and his affiliates may have contracts; if by some chance he would take the Premiere offer he could flip-flop Curley’s show to 3-6 pm. Carr is only a year or so younger than Rush...
As it says were Hannity to shift to 12-3 pm it would be a pretty long day for him. O’Reilly was doing that for awhile...a noon 2 or 3 hour show then the nightly show on Fox. Now, O’Reilly has a 15 min update (the aforementioned WRKO runs that at noon, technically delaying Curley to 12:15)
>>“They’re basically three smart asses who are squarely on the conservative side of things.”
My experience with this sort of hosts on iHeartMedia (ClearChannel) is that they are typically millennial squishy libertarians. Houston’s got a number of them on the dial.
Rush used absurdity to challenge Leftist absurdity.
There have been some FM talk stations for awhile. Boston had one at 96.9 from 1999 to 2012. In some markets an AM talker is simulcast on an FM station, either a full powered one or a smaller “FM translator”. In places like Manchester NH, Portland ME, Albany NY (WGY has one now I believe—the weaker FM translators...)(
But yes with a smart phone you can hear these hosts.
AM radio now actually has a lot jore music including oldies. When they get an FM translator, they put the music on the AM and thus get it on FM as well. In Barre VT WSNO AM 1450 ran talk like Rush and Howie Carr. Then when they got an FM translator they went top 40 as
“105.7 The Beat”...(and 1450 AM). I’d think today’s teens don’t even know AM (or radio!) exists but who knows.
AM also has foreign language, religion, sports.
If EIB and premier (or whoever makes these decisions) is going to permanently replace Rush with Trump or Steyn or Beck, they need to do it quickly.
I love Steyn, but I don’t know if he would wear well five days a week. The overnight guys, Harley and McNamara, are as good as it gets. Both are brilliant and funny. Harley does voices, and McNamara is a genius.
As for Rush’s guest hosts, I think that Todd Herman is the best, though I love them all. Steyn is an occasional delicious treat.
Sounds like a law firm......................
Kathryn Rush ought to have a talk with Devon Williams, daughter of the late Walter E. Williams, Jr.
I suspect some of the larger stations will return to the format that was in place prior to Rush - having local hosts which will allow them to retain the advertising dollars.
We’ll see.
BINGO!
Mark Levin could do it..............................
AM radio will remain it just will only air sports and religious programming in English. Everything else will be non-English.
And ClearChannel/iHeartMedia will be happy with the world like that.
Has she had mega-success on a local show?
“Rush used absurdity to challenge Leftist absurdity.”
I had to LOL yesterday when they re-played Rush making fun of some stupid lib statement/idea. (Can’t recall which one now.) He said that if you play “Una Paloma Blanca” backwards, Satan speaks. And then he did it, with some phony Satan voice in the background. Listeners believed it and were calling their churches. It was so funny; I had forgotten about it.
That, I do not know.
