Actually, it’s the voting public. Half of the people want low taxes and all the people want high levels of service*.
The politicians are kind of caught in the middle, so their only way is is low taxes and high service levels - hence they drive the country broke, in the process.
*p.s., try mentioning Means Testing for the largest welfare program of all, Social Security, and see what kind of reaction you, even here at FR. Virtually everyone wants their handouts, although everyone also thinks that only THEIR handouts should exist.
