Power cut across Texas as snow, ice blanket southern Plains

DALLAS - A winter storm dropping snow and ice also sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency in Texas a day after conditions canceled flights and impacted traffic across large swaths of the U.S.

Rotating power outages were initiated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, early Monday morning, meaning hundreds of thousands went without electricity for short periods as temperatures fell into the teens near Dallas and 20s around Houston.

The council described the rotating outages as a “last resort to preserve the reliability of the electric system as a whole,” adding that utility transmission companies are tasked with determining how to reduce demand on the system.

“Every grid operator and every electric company is fighting to restore power right now,” ERCOT President and CEO Bill Magness said in a statement.

The rotating outages were expected to last throughout Monday morning.

More than 2.3 million customers in Texas were in the dark as of 7 a.m. local time, according to poweroutage.us, a utility tracking site.

Around 5,000 Oklahoma Gas & Electric customers were without power overnight, and Entergy Arkansas logged about 3,000 outages. Both states have much smaller populations compared with Texas.

Officials in Houston had warned people to prepare for outages and hazardous roads — conditions similar to what residents might see in the wake of a Category 5 hurricane. George Bush International Airport in Houston closed Monday morning due to ice accumulation on runways.

I have an aunt who lives in Bandera, TX... power went out for them this morning and it’s 7 degrees. Meanwhile, here in Indiana, we’re looking at as much as 12” of snow by 7AM tomorrow. We live across the street from a very popular sledding hill. It’s going to be wild.

It’s funny, but when California last did this, it was because of energy sources and liberal politics.

Absolutely. Those chowderheads said that record freezes were a definite indicator of global warming.

12” is almost too deep to sled in. Need a few Chevy Chase folks with saucer sleds to pack it down.

With the new Green energy, this is going to happened pretty regularly!
The solar cells covered by snow, the windmills frozen.

We need to stop this expansion of frozen wind generation and ice covered solar panels. Time to get more natural gas generating facilities in the works. Much more reliable energy is needed, not California style brain waves.

I lived in Lewisville Texas in 1983 and it was the coldest December in 100 years. It didn’t get over 27 for a high and down to 7 for a low for 2 weeks. It changed New years day 1984 and got into the 70s. I moved back to Mexifornia shortly after. The politics suck here but you can’t beat the weather.
