U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has drawn criticism on social media for his lack of respect for Capitol officer Eugene Goodman after video footage of him refusing to applaud the officer during a standing ovation went viral.
Lawmakers gave Officer Goodman a standing ovation in the Senate chamber on Friday following the question-and-answer session of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial.
Goodman was hailed a hero and gained national recognition after video footage showing the officer leading a group of pro-Trump rioters up a staircase and away from an immediate entrance to the Senate chamber during the Capitol riot went viral on social media.
"Rand Paul deserved that ass kicking he got from his neighbor!!!," wrote one user, referring to the 2017 incident, where the senator was attacked by his neighbor during a dispute over their yards.
"When you see Rand Paul clearly uncomfortable with a public display of respect and appreciation for a black man's actions, you really appreciate just why it was he voted against making Lynching a federal hate crime," commented another. As previously reported, last year, Paul stalled an anti-lynching bill that would make lynching a federal hate crime. The bill was named the Emmett Till Antilynching Act after the 14-year-old black boy who was tortured and killed in 1955 in Mississippi.
"WTF is wrong with that man? There's seriously something wrong with the guy. He can't even pretend for 30 seconds to show some goddamn gratitude to a guy who saved lives that day," tweeted a third user, while another opined, "He is a sociopath in every sense of the word. Apathetic, unremorseful, unwilling to listen. That he sits in that seat is an abomination."

Aww the leftist clickbait media is afraid of RAND PAUL now? Haha. I mean don’t get me wrong, Rand has generally been great but someone who would be allowed to get the GOPe Prez nomination in 2024 he is not . . .
Peaceful protesters led away.
Any opposition to ONE PARTY rule must be crushed and eliminated so you will see more of this i.e Republicans attacked/blamed for everything.
Try that in a courtroom near you. Give a standing ovation to a witness after they testify
I’m surprised the Dems didn’t have a standing ovation for the officer who killed an unarmed woman.
Rand Paul is a good guy. I wish Trump had picked him instead of Pence for VP. Officer Goodman is also a good guy. He was able to control that mob without shooting anyone. So I have no problem with Goodman getting a little recognition, even if the Senate is using it for political purposes.
If for some reason Paul did not applaud, then he made an unforced error here. After all, Officer Goodman is not Che Guevara.
One additional point. The IB Times headline said Paul did not applaud. But in the article they say Paul appeared not to applaud. Appeared? So maybe the headline is twisting the truth a bit.
Maybe Rand was thinking about Solzhenitsyn
The audience exploded into applause. Every person in the room jumped up and began to wildly clap, as if racing each other to see who could get to their feet the fastest. The applause was all to honor the dictator Joseph Stalin at a 1937 conference of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union.
But the big question soon became: Who would have the nerve to be the first person to stop clapping in honor of Comrade Stalin? No one had the courage, so the clapping went on…and on…and on.
“The applause went on—six, seven, eight minutes! They were done for! Their goose was cooked! They couldn’t stop now till they collapsed with heart attacks! At the rear of the hall, which was crowded, they could of course cheat a bit, clap less frequently, less vigorously, not so eagerly…Nine minutes! Ten!…Insanity! To the last man! With make-believe enthusiasm on their faces, looking at each other with faint hope, the district leaders were just going to go on and on applauding till they fell where they stood, till they were carried out of the hall on stretchers.”
At last, after eleven minutes of non-stop clapping, the director of a paper factory finally decided enough was enough. He stopped clapping and sat down—a miracle!
“To a man, everyone else stopped dead and sat down,” Solzhenitsyn says.
That same night, the director of the paper factory was arrested and sent to prison for ten years. Authorities came up with some official reason for his sentence, but during his interrogation, he was told: “Don’t ever be the first to stop applauding!”

At least he was standing up. He could have stayed seated.
Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of rioters being happily led around like they were going on a guided tour? Democrat peaceful protesters would have bashed in every door they passed and peaceably thrown molotovs into the rooms as a legitimate request for redress of their grievances.
It’s the cameraman that deserved the award for anticipating the officer’s every move.
Good on you, Rand.
And what about the LEOs that were suicided ? Do they not get recognition?
The people criticizing him are the same leftists who spent all last summer vilifying police officers. Such hypocrisy.
If the honorable Michael van der Veer had represented Paul ....he would have shown the zillion times DEMS don’t applaud.....ESPECIALLY during the State of the Union address!!!!
....even when a veteran was honored!
He would have shown Nancy Pelosi tearing up the SOTU address.....
He would have shown the many times Nancy did not applaud!
Personally, I’m not buying ‘their’ scenario that this ‘officer’ was a hero.
Maybe Paul isn’t either
Just hours after PDJT’s attorneys inundated the chambers with hundreds of pieces of evidence of their hypocrisy. I guess they don’t remember how the whole RAT side of chambers sat like drones when Rush was presented his medal.
Well at least he didn’t kneel!
What was Paul’s reasoning?
Oh! Oh! He failed to honor a “Black” man.
What garbage.
The guy was just doing his job.
Media strumpets
Read reply number five. The jury doesn’t applaud witnesses.
