Marijuana legalization bill inches closer to approval in NJ

New Jersey voters approved a measure in November to legalize recreational marijuana. More than three months later, Gov. Phil Murphy still hasn't signed a bill to make it happen...

The purported holdup has been Murphy's concern that the proposed law hasn't specified uniform penalties for underage users.

Last week, state Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez, D-Camden, and state Sen. Nick Scutari, D-Union, introduced a "cleanup" bill to address Murphy's concerns...

The cleanup bill is slated to be heard in committee in Trenton on Monday. It must pass both the Assembly and the Senate — and there is no guarantee it will — before Thursday for it to proceed to the governor's desk, as per the agreement between Murphy and the Legislature.

"It's my understanding we have broad agreement," Scutari said. "It may not be unanimous, but we have majority. I think the governor will sign this simultaneously along with the other two bills that will create the cannabis industry and stop arrests."

“You left off these statements from the doctor. I wonder why?
“I’m happy we’re ending our reliance on the criminal justice system to prevent use by minors. That’s because it simply doesn’t work [...] The best way to prevent underage use is telling kids what the real dangers are.””

Those are his personal (political, not medical) opinions.

The statements that I included were the factual statements he made about known medical issues with marijuana (known to be detrimental to brain development in children and teenagers). That is where his expertise is most pertinent.

There are well known detrimental effects of marijuana on adults as well.

Of course, there are well known detrimental effects from many legal substances - alcohol, cigarettes, sugar, etc..

It is good to be aware of them.

Moderate, occasional use of marijuana is safe for the great bulk of people, and effective for some common issues, like anxiety or poor appetite.

Heavy, chronic use however, is known to persistently alter neurotransmitter levels (Dopamine) and brain structure of adults, as well as to impair memory and motivation.

For some adults with borderline psychosis, marijuana (and THC extracts) are potent enough dopamine agonists to shift them over the line. Most anti-psychotic drugs work by limiting dopamine (which marijuana/THC increase).

In fact, anyone will hallucinate (the hallmark of psychosis), if given a large enough dose of THC. Some are simply more sensitive to it.

Not so - red states Alaska, Montana, and South Dakota have done it.

I stand corrected... leftist areas and areas where half the population is an hour and a half from the nearest Walmart and it is dark and 30 degrees below zero for a good portion of the winter.

Indeed. Would you agree that marijuana ought to have approximately the same legal status as alcohol and tobacco?

Pretty much. But I am not an expert, and I am not responsible for the effects it might have. If I were, a lot of unknowns would be keeping me awake at night.

My nagging concern with marijuana legalization, is particularly with concentrated extracts, which can approach pure THC - a very potent drug, an hallucinogen.

In practice, people don’t extract and sell pure nicotine (which is a deadly poison), but they do with THC oil.

That will increase the number of kids born with scrambled brains.

Doubtful

Robert Downey Jr., was doubtfully affected at age 8.

Well, maybe a little bit...

This place has always turned a blind eye to marijuana, but in the last few years it has gone crazy.

You have "Florida-Man", too?

Marijuana initiates miscarriages, a closer cousin to abortion we haven't seen yet.

I don’t want to legalize it completely, but I would decriminalize it. Do we really want stoners in jail occupying berths that could fit home invaders, rapists and murderers?

Just treat it like an HOV violation and fine the idiot $500 dollars.

I was fine with legalization, and then I read about auto accidents going way up in Colorado after it was legalized there. It was so dismaying to see that one fail.

I think you may have read some nanny-statist disinformation.

Legalization is a racist policy that negatively impacts minority entrepreneurs.

I hear your sarcasm, and yet there is truth in the fact that the 'legalization' usually comes with licensing requirements, etc. that negatively impact those with smaller pockets to meet those burdens, and they would statistically be more likely to be minorities.

“One study found that women who used marijuana were at an increased risk of having a miscarriage. Other studies have not confirmed this finding.” - https://mothertobaby.org/fact-sheets/marijuana-pregnancy/

So sad for you.

Don't overlook the Daddies who smoked MJ. They caused miscarriages too.

This happened to conservative friends back in the 80s.

Treat it exactly like Booze. Do what thou wilt, but buzzed or not, you’re responsible for your actions.

I see nothing in my copy of the Constitution that gives the government any say over what’s in my body unless or until I deprive someone of life, liberty, or property; obviously operating a motor vehicle, being a privilege, not a right, is subject to reasonable restrictions such as not being buzzed.
