Only an idiot would invest in Venezuela.
*** The results of Bernie Sanders’ “democratic socialism”. ***
Since this is coming our way, I wonder, are Venezuelans upset at the socialists? Or are they like Americans in that they can’t connect the results with the policies?
Agreed. If/when investors manage to get a company back on it's feet and working reasonably well, you can count on the leftists swooping back in like vultures. They'll re-nationalize the company/industry and the investors will lose anything they can't carry on their backs as they flee for their lives. Because you know they'll be the one's demonized and blamed for any perceived failures.
Coming to every single blue state near you, starting with California and New York.
Sort of sad considering how much oil they have.
If I remember correctly Cuba did the same somewhere in their past. Once the new plant was up and running, the Cuban govt seized it.
Ceded to whom?
If the Venezuela has truly learned its lesson, it would be a great investment opportunity.
However, once capitalism saves Venezuela, the government would promptly nationalize businesses again and run them into the ground.
It’s sad how far Venezuela has fallen in such a short amount of time. But it was totally foreseeable.
Of course, Thatcher was right.
Predictable. As exhibited throughout modern human history, Bernie will tell you it was because HE was not in charge of implementing the plan.
AOC would say it was because SHE was not in charge. Pelosi, Shumer, Harris, and others would tell you it was because they were not in charge.
The old axiom that socialism works until you run out of other peoples money is true, but an even better axiom is that every true believer is convinced that they are capable of running it to perfection unlike those who tried before.
They will never admit the real flaw of socialism is that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
I would submit that the progressives in America would be far more deadly than those who view socialism as an economic model of fairness. They seek to control every facet of your life and thoughts.
The modern American socialist is not focused only on economic matters.... they are consumed by radical environmentalism and social justice. They have partially succeeded given the cancel culture and censorship we now observe in our body politic.
Maybe, but if I were a billionaire with a few million sitting around gathering dust at a negative interest rate, I might be willing to gamble on Venezuela's socialist government giving out and being replaced by a Pinochet- or Franco-type society where the government would be more supportive of business. I would only do it with money I could afford to lose, of course.
it sounds like the government has stopped controlling the companies and democratic socialism is over...
i haven’t read the article, but just going by the headline it looks like good news.
All US deportees should be sent to Venezuela.
In fact, we should set up an processing center there.
AOC would say it was because SHE was not in charge. Pelosi, Shumer, Harris, and others would tell you it was because they were not in charge.
The situation is a bit more complicated than this.
There is a belief among most Americans that we can, as a country, do anything we decide to do. (I think another way of saying this is "American exceptionalism.")
Mix that belief in our infinite ability with the belief that socialism failed because the correct people weren't in charge, and the result is a pathological, dysfunctional belief that we can achieve a socialist utopia.
They will never admit the real flaw of socialism is that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
That flaw is the result of an even more fundamental truth about socialism, that socialism violates human behavior. In a ideal socialist society, for example, some people are going to voluntarily spend ten years or more getting advanced education (BS, doctorate, specialized internships) in order to provide advanced medical care to other people because it is the right thing to do. Not because they expect any personal reward from it, but because other people need that treatment. And the university professors are providing the education without any expectation of personal reward, and the textbook manufacturers are providing textbooks free, etc., etc. None of that is going to happen in the real world. Thus, socialist leaders place themselves in the position of coercing the desired behavior from the peasants (they don't have the rights of citizens at this point). And because the peasants resist, the supreme leaders have to become more heavy handed. And that is how they gain power, leading to the situation where they become thoroughly corrupted.
Surely someone less undesirable than Bloomberg has reported on his topic?
