Gov. Gavin Newsom and San Francisco Mayor London Breed renewed their push for public schools to reopen for in-person learning, as the pace of vaccinations continued to pick up.
Newsom traveled to Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, to celebrate its opening as California’s largest mass-vaccination site, capable of offering up to 15,000 shots a day — though the site will operate at a much more modest capacity initially because not enough doses are available.
But the political focus remained on education, as the anniversary of shelter-in-place approaches and parents wrestle with the fact that children in many public schools have been out of classrooms for a year.
“Our default and our priority is to get our kids safely back to schools,” he said Tuesday. “We can safely do that, as many schools have safely reopened in the midst of this surge.”

I smell your Craptastic policies.
Article continues and gets better:
But Newsom said: “We have to get our youngest kids back to in-person environments where their socio-emotional needs are met, not just their academic needs. ... To have a plan that’s not a plan to reopen? That’s not a plan.”
None of the nine Bay Area counties have been able to advance out of the state’s most-restrictive category for coronavirus progress, with all in the purple zone, according to state data released Tuesday.
Dr. Sara Cody, health officer for Santa Clara County, warned people to get used to living under strict pandemic restrictions.
“Our rates are still extraordinarily high,” she told the Board of Supervisors. “We’re still in deep purple and we’re likely to be there for a while.”
You guys are such pathetic jokes.
If your paycheck were impacted by this I'm pretty sure the Plandemic would be over...
The only reason they're even considering reopening.
These jokers are literally “all talk.”
Notice Dem politicians always say “we have to get these schools open” but they remain firmly shut in areas with strong unions (most areas). The unions have the upper hand.
A few governors have had success by announcing a withdrawal of funding—but even that doesn’t make the unions budge.
FL and TX have been great. They require all districts to at least offer a hybrid (2-3 days a week or half days) plan for K-12.
CA is a disaster (as usual). And that’s MILLIONS of kids.
About a decade or so ago they arrested the most powerful woman criminal in all of Mexico, who was involved in money laundering, murder, and extortion. She was head of Mexico’s teacher’s union. And since Cali is now Mexico-lite, this should be fun.
Parents in our area are working on recalling our entire school board. There are other reasons why things are starting to finally reopen a bit. Now K-2 finally went back in person (just 2 days a week) TODAY. It took this long. Those poor kids. And another week for 3-5 to join. Nothing for middle or high school.
Our school board used to let the union head rant and rave for 1/2 an hour, spewing anti-Trump nonsense that had nothing to do with schools. And our board is dim witted and idiotic. (Mark Twain: “First God created idiots. That was for practice. Then He created school boards.”)
Now enraged parents, ready to recall the board and now joining the meetings for the first time, have successfully gotten her time limited to 5 minutes. Parents only have 3 minutes.
Teachers unions. Scott Adams is right—they are the WORST problem in the US right now.
When they get to ‘5 authors’ and firings, wake me.
