You have to erase all memory of slavery, and the notion that there is an alternative (Freedom), before you can re-implement it. The goal is to establish that slavery is the norm and nobody should ever think otherwise.

As a Southerner I have a different take on Lincoln. I am glad some people decided to research him and his actions and are questioning the fact that he had been deified. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s many of the writings that exposed his true identity were removed from the information pathways. The second largest aggregation of Lincoln writings and memorabilia is at a small college in NE Tennessee, Lincoln Memorial University, which I attended and was privy to read many rare books printed about Lincoln that are no longer available. Lincoln's persona today is a far reach from what he really was IMO. This still doesn't take away from his accomplishments and his deserved notoriety. Removing his monuments and renaming schools because of one part of his persona is folly. If this is their reasoning then MLK,Jr. is a fair target and should be reexamined thoroughly because MLK,Jr, was a far more ethical travesty than was Lincoln.

I'm sure there are plenty of books printed ABOUT any public figure that are 'interesting' to say the least.

I always recommend that people read Lincoln's own voluminous writings. To read a man's writings (both public and those meant to be private) is far more valuable than to imbibe the somewhat tepid brew of someone else's interpretations and probable bias.
