Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wants the United States to lead the world on high-speed rail, a goal that's easier said than done.
American transportation investments been car-dominated since hundreds of billions were spent to build the Interstate Highway System in the 20th century. But Buttigieg, echoing his boss, President Joe Biden (who is sometimes called "Amtrak Joe," thanks to his habit of riding the train between his home state of Delaware and Washington) has spoken recently of upgrading American rail.
"We gotta take things to the next level," Buttigieg said on MSNBC last week. "I think we have a real opportunity to do that especially with the bipartisan appetite for real investments that we have before us this year."

‘Sectrans’ bringing up the rear.
Maybe he can get some tips from California — they’ve had such an economical success with high speed rail.
Has Bootigig given one second’s thought to how pandemics current and future have destroyed the utility of public transportation?
Pinging Willie Green...
He missed that boat about 75 years ago. After WW II the country made the decision to go to air travel. To move to high speed rail may cost $5 to $10 Trillion.
What’s going to power these high-speed trains, algae?
One of the stupidest ideas going. Yay, let’s each waste oodles of valuable vacation time each year traveling to and from our destinations.
How do these lunatics win any elections? Oh yeah, fraud.
What is with the choo choo fetishism with these Dimm?
Would you happen to have a link to the map?
In a densely-populated nation such as Japan, high-speed rail makes sense.
In a heavily-populated region with long-established urban centers such as Europe, high-speed rail sort of makes sense.
In a vast nation with densely populated coasts and a sparsely populated interior such as the US, high-speed rail makes no sense.
Really, why take an hours-long flight cross-country when you could spend days stuck in a train car (where arrival times are often missed by HOURS rather than MINUTES)?
