During the White House press briefing on Friday, Press Secretary Jen Psaki was blindsided by a reporter when she learned that Joe Biden had signed an executive on Tuesday resuming catch and release on the border.
According to the NY Post, “the executive order only permits Border Patrol to hold an undocumented illegal alien crossing the border up to 72 hours”
Understandably, the reporter brought up concerns about the potential spread of COVID from random migrants who enter the country. When the reporter mentioned the executive order, Psaki gave her a blank stare, clearly not knowing what she was talking about.
“What could be done to provide COVID testing to migrants at the border because right now the US Customs and Border Protection are saying that they’re having to catch and release some migrants without giving them any kind of COVID test before they’re entering the community. So what is being done and what could be done?” the reporter asked.
“Are you – are you suggesting they’re letting people in across the border without testing them or…tell me a little bit more,” Psaki responded, clearly confused.
“Because of the executive order that the President signed earlier this week-“, the reporter said before Psaki jumped in.
“Which executive order? Which one?” Psaki asked.
As the reporter clarified her question, you can see that Psaki doesn’t even nod when the executive order is mentioned. She appeared to be completely unprepared once again.
“The order rescinding President Trump’s policy which stopped catch and release. They’re saying that they’re having to release some migrants into the community before they know for sure that they do not have COVID. They’re worried that it could spread in the community. Is there anything being done at the federal level to make sure that this is not contributing to the spread of Coronavirus in this country,” the reporter clarified.
