ST PAUL, Minn. — On Friday afternoon, Governor Walz announced in a press release that he has authorized the Minnesota National Guard to provide "public safety assistance" in Minneapolis and St. Paul during the trials of the four former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's death.
“There are some public safety events for which you cannot plan, and there are some for which you can," he said in the release. "The upcoming trials of the former officers involved in the death of George Floyd have raised the potential of civil unrest in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and nearby communities. At the request of the City of Minneapolis and the City of Saint Paul, I have authorized the Minnesota National Guard to assist local law enforcement agencies during the upcoming trials.”
The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis Police Officer who is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd's death, will begin on March 8.
The trial of Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, who are charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter, is set to begin on Aug. 23.
Walz added that members of the National Guard will be "visible and available as needed as public interest increases surrounding the trials."
He previously activated the National Guard during the unrest following George Floyd's death, as well as after Chauvin was released on bond.
Earlier this week, he also called on the State Legislature to pass his State Aid for Emergencies (SAFE) Account budget proposal to help pay for potential increased law enforcement costs starting this spring.
Defund the police. Get rid of the police department. Hire social workers. And...
Bring in the military!
It's going to be real interesting in the Twin Cities come March. Unfortunately for yours truly, I have to venture into the heart of Minneapolis in March for an out-patient procedure. The facility that I will be visiting is surrounded by burned out buildings and storefronts. Fortunately, the procedure requires me to bring a driver to take me home. A well-armed driver.
The cops will walk.
The rabble will go ‘shoe shopping’.
The media will tell us it’s the fault of white people.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
I don’t see how they are going to convict the one (junior) cop who was just standing there and not participating.
Yeah. This may turn into Ellison biting off more than he can chew.
Hopefully.
Can’t wait for the Ashli Babbitt trail and her royal funeral procession. Oh wait, the evil doers said nothing to see here. Don’t forget her name, she was unarmed and murdered in cold blood by a coward. Shoot and killl somebody who breaks into your house and watch what happens to you.
You must be going to Abbott for your heart or the UofM for
cancer? (either places are excellent)
Bring a hammer or a small axe. Set it on the car seat next to you.
Although, they did arrest 39? people in a car jacking gang. It may be safe to venture downtown MPLS, but I choose to stay in the suburbs.
Didn’t you get the Amber Alert on your phone?
I live in a condo. I ran out to get my laundry. When I came in I heard the “siren”. North. Trust me, bring an axe or two.
I saw black ice today. Real black ice. since it is so cold,
car exhaust is starting to freeze on the roadways.
Watch out, especially at the corners and stop lights.
(people not from here think ice is black ice)
