Additional details have been released by the Erie County District Attorney’s office in the rare attack and defensive shooting at the State Game Lands Shooting Range 109. The incident happened on 22 December 2020.
On December 22nd, 2020, a group of four friends made way to the Pennsylvania Game Lands in Greene Township to test out a recently purchased Beretta nine millimeter handgun.
Five people were directly involved in the shooting. Two have been identified. The attacker was Robert A. Eppley, 26 years old, who had served as a Marine. His fiancee, said to be pregnant with his child, was present. He shot his long term friend, Michael Patterson, 28 years old. Patterson’s girlfriend was also present.
The two couples had come to the gun range a little before 2 p.m. to shoot a Beretta 9mm pistol which Patterson had recently purchased.
A little while after they arrived the 67-year-old man arrived and set up on the pistol firing point to their immediate left. He was firing a Ruger .22 caliber pistol. There is only three pistol firing points at the range.
Shortly after 2 p.m., the four friends had been taking turns shooting the Beretta. Robert Eppley had reloaded the pistol and fired about five shots downrange. He abruptly turned to his right and commenced firing at Patterson. One report states he fired at Patterson and “his girlfriend”.
This correspondent has been unable to determine if “his girlfriend” refers to Eppley’s fiance or to Patterson’s girlfriend. From goerie.com:

Patterson was hit 5 times with a 9mm. He was released from the hospital later that night.
Eppley was hit 5 times with a .22. He was immediately stopped and died at the scene.
My carry firearm is a .22 magnum revolver with 8 shots. At my age the recoil from a .40 makes it difficult to stay on target.
With negligible recoil, the same isn’t true for the .22 magnum.
How about 2 guys 2ho had been drinking , went to the range to shoot a new 9mm, one turned and started shooting the other from about 10 feet Way, a bystander shooting next to then open fired on the shooter stopping the attack and killing the shooter.
But, don't scoff at a .22lr.
Most editing is automated these days.
I saw it as well, after the fact.
Once published, it is very difficult to correct at AmmoLand.
Might be part of the motivation for the attack.
Yes, likely motive. Who’s the father?
“Might be part of the motivation for the attack.”

Possibly. But never laugh at him and tell your armed drunk friend that he has poor aim and is a pitiful, ineffectual shooter.
Mine is a Taurus with red laser, for the same reasons you cited. I load it with Hornady, with the little orange tip removed.
I have hornaday too but i leave the polymer in.
I carry strip reloading with eight in each but I would like to find a more swift way to reload.
I have taken to often carrying a Beretta 32 because a couple of extra mags makes for more quickly getting reloaded. There are some excellent cavitation rounds for 32 acp now.
I want one of them guns!!
Ifgou ask me the “ pregnant girlfriend” was put there as an emotional trigger for the emotionally retarded to go ! oh OMG AND SHES PREGNANT!! OMG!! OMG!
I’m curious as to which Ruger .22 caliber pistol the 67 year-old used. The Mark series semi-autos provide 10-round mags (”clips” for those of you in Rio Linda), the LCR revolvers...8 rounds, I believe. It was fortunate the 67 year-old guy had a loaded mag or cylinder ready to go.
I have a Mark III that makes me feel good about my shooting if I’ve had a lousy day on the range with my 9-mil Beretta. The 22 is fun to shoot...and deadly accurate. Would not want someone unloading a mag at me of the 22LR.
Oh and...alcohol and guns don’t mix.
While I would not scoff at .22LR, it is nothing like the .22 magnum.
I hope this isn't proof of how wonderful a .22 is for a carry gun, because it's not. Here's another anecdotal story:
I grew up on Houston's north side with some seedy characters who regularly did jail time. Though I managed to create a respectable life, other friends were not so fortunate. One of them had just completed 10 years in the pen, and decided it was a good idea to kick in his neighbors front door and attack him. When he kicked in the door, the neighbor pulled a .22 revolver from the lounge chair he was sitting in and shot the attacker center chest, nicking his heart. Before he could get another shot off, the attacker proceeded to beat him senseless, and robbed him. The attacker actually made it back home and was found there, very much alive, after a witness called the cops upon hearing the original shot.
No, a .22 does not make a good carry gun.
The Magnum is more powerful, but out of a short barrel, there is much less differnce.
At least you and me. Took me four times to read it and I’m still not sure what it says.
