First on CNN: Liz Cheney gets boost from McConnell amid divisive intraparty battle over Trump's impeachment

Rep. Liz Cheney, under fire from former President Donald Trump and his staunchest defenders, is picking up support from some influential Republicans as her allies close ranks and resist the effort to oust her from the third-ranking spot in House GOP leadership.

On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was the latest Republican to give her a boost, saying in a statement to CNN that she had "the courage" to act on her convictions in the aftermath of her vote to impeach Trump last month on a charge he incited the deadly insurrection that ransacked Capitol Hill on January 6.

"Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them," McConnell said. "She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation."

I wonder how much sway her father has in Wyoming and elsewhere. Also wonder what he is doing behind the scenes.

I’m sure he still has a lot of sway, but at some point people are disgusted with carpetbagging and politicians who don’t bother to represent the people. Did she ever live in Wyoming?

The words “convictions” and Republican should not be used in the same sentence Mitch. Since none of you have neither convictions nor guts

OK. Let’s all have the courage to act on our convictions, and throw the bums out.

Liz had the courage to suck up to Democrats. She’s earned her Liva Snaps.

I think the last German president said the same exact words about Adolf Hitler and you know how that ended up.

Very good point! McCarthy is the leader in the House so his opinion is more important than McConnell's. McCarthy's support for Cheney, specifically his supporting her to continue in a leadership position in the Republican caucus, is an even clearer demonstration of the worthlessness of what the GOP has become.

At some point McConnell might have convictions. To be followed by sentencing. We can hope!

I don’t know whether Cheney will be re-elected. Wyoming doesn’t vote until 2022, and people sometimes have short memories.

The front burner now is whether the House Republicans will continue her as the third-ranking leader of the GOP caucus. That’s something they completely control, as opposed to the objections to the electoral votes, which they knew would go nowhere.

No such sticking up for the Republicans who voted against impeachment, or who worked for the Trump Administration, or who got a degree from Harvard, or who had You Tube channels, Twitter accounts, or Facebook whosawhatsits. They’re all blackballed in the best (NOT!) traditions of Joe McCarthy, Stalin and Hitler. Only the courage of certain convictions is respected. Have courage for the wrong convictions and you’re a Nazi, racist, white supremacist, and lift your hand in anger just once, and you’re an armed insurrectionist.

The Dems aren’t stupid, it’s us that’s the Stupid Party... they’ve already decided how to use all this to their own advantage, and prevent anyone from EVER restoring a Constitutional Republic.

I saw the state senator running against her, Anthony Bouchard (sp.), and he is articulate and convincing. Still, I expect her to put in fathom candidates to split the opposition to her.

WY has closed primaries; only registered Republicans can vote in the primary, and there is of course no runoff option.

Joe McCarthy did not oppress civil liberties like the other two you mentioned. The old Soviet records admitted that McCarthy was right about the claims of communist subversion in the U.S. government.

Why is Mitch getting involved in the House? He defends Cheney and attacks Green. McCarthy needs to go along with McConnell. The Dems stand by AOC, Omar, Talib, Schiff, Swalwell, etc. while GOP leadership eat their own.

Cheney will be the test case on the survival of the GOP. The Bushies must be exorcised from the party. The GOP must become the party of America first and the American worker.
