To say America was born with a birth defect is to imply that we brought something new into the world; i.e., slavery. America, instead, played an important role in bringing an end to slavery.
Ours was a revolution. That means we changed things from the way they had previously been. And, it is a continuing revolution. Things continue to change in ways, some of these changes, in their specifics, beyond the imagination of the Founders. Thus, Hayek dedicated his book The Constitution of Liberty “to the unknown civilization taking shape in America.”
It is for all of us to count our blessings as Americans, whether from 1776 or from 1863, and to dedicate ourselves to continue the revolution so all of our fellow citizens will enjoy freedom and equality; even, all people of the world. The actual words of Mattiis are both a self-contradiction and factually wrong. Birth defects are not necessarily inherited. Birth defects can result from something going wrong during gestation or during birth itself; e.g., oxygen being cut off.

Further, we didn’t inherit slavery from Europe. At the time, western Europe was the only place in the world where slavery had been abolished. Jefferson, in his draft of the Declaration, said slavery was imposed upon us by Great Britain. In the Catholic world, the Pope condemned the development of a new form of race-based slavery in the New World. So, slavery in the New World wasn’t inherited from the Old World, but a counter-revolution to the Enlightenment taking place in the Old World. Its cause wasn’t its transmission from the Old WOrld. Instead, its cause was the evil that is in man’s heart.
