Bulgarian authorities have busted a counterfeit gang that promoted the quality of its illegal documents and banknotes by showing a fake Bulgarian passport bearing the picture of US actor Sylvester Stallone.

Prosecutors on Friday (Jan 29) charged four Bulgarians suspected of belonging to an organised crime ring making and distributing the fake Bulgarian documents and counterfeit US dollar and euro bills in the Balkan country.

The four were arrested after printing presses and equipment for the production of counterfeit banknotes and documents were found following searches at 30 locations across Bulgaria in a joint operation with Europol and the US Secret Service.

If they can counterfeit passports they can counterfeit negative Covid test certificates just as easily.

How would such a passport work in reality? I thought all modern airports would check such things digitally. Which would mean that no matter how perfect a document may look it would never be able to pass muster at a modern airport. Or am I mistaken?

I think you are correct, in that biometric passports are considerably more difficult to misuse.

Biometric/RFID passports are the default across Europe and automatic entry/exit gates are everywhere at airports, but not at land & sea borders - the obvious vector for smuggling people.

Though there’s still that awkward issue with the facial recognition part.

The BBC just posted this:

“Europol, the EU’s law enforcement agency, has issued a warning that criminals are selling fake negative Covid-19 test certificates. The fear is this could enable people to cheat travel restrictions.

It comes as an investigation by BBC News has found falsified NHS certificates for sale online. There are also ones from clinics in Nigeria sold in forums used by organised crime groups”
