Yes they had those in the civil war.

I can’t find one reference to any being used in WV. Most were deployed in the deep south. They were also called “toe poppers.” Heard that union troops despised land mines so much that they would put captured Confederates in front of their advance where mines were detected. Worked well as a deterrent as few mines were seen after doing that.

If a Civil War era land mine is found these days most bomb squads/ EOD units will most likely detonate them in place as an active one would probably be too unstable to safely handle.

Closest use of Civil War landmines I can find near WV is around Richmond and east on the VA part of the DELMARVA peninsula. They were next mostly used in Alabama and Georgia. Of course I’m talking about deployment in any numbers of note. Yes I know some were used elsewhere during the CW but in small numbers.
