A massive section of California’s historic Highway 1 has collapsed. On Thursday, torrential rains took down a chunk of the road near Big Sur, leaving a gaping hole in the historic road.
Authorities closed the scenic route for over 20 miles in each direction and will now work to reopen the route as soon as possible.

It’s Global Warming, I’m telling you!

Drove that Big Sur stretch last summer. Remembering that, OANN’s photo of the washed out section makes my palms sweat. Yikes. Screw the scenic route. Next time, I’ll stick to Hwy 101.
How long before CA asks the rest of America to rebuild for them?
It’s a start
Or move one more road over and enjoy the monotony of I-5.
It’s been a couple years but last time I drove I-5 in S. CA the road was in awful shape for an interstate.
In before the CA FReepers who’ll say their state is the bestest and they contribute the most to the FReeperthons.
Gee and I thought it would’ve been Devils Slide
impeach governor newsome, its his fault

from big rigs creating potholes.
they are fixing some stretches, but it is a long freeway...
How the heck do you fix something like that? It’s not like there’s a hole that you just fill in......
I’ve parked at that pullout before and had lunch whilst gazing out to sea...
Yeah, I actually do prefer I-5. Yes, it’s a bore but incredibly fast when there’s minimal traffic. I’ve done SF to LA in a little more than 5 hours.
Interstate 5 is a lot faster than 101.
Was wondering that too. Do they blast inland and simply move the road? Seems like that would be simper than trying to shore up the whole side of that hill which is itself a slippery slope looking to further erode. Seems like a monumental engineering project either way.
The road at Devils Slide was turned into a scenic park. Highway 1 goes into a tunnel just south of Devil's Slide and comes out above Linda Mar, behind Pedro Point. I recall contributing money to the preservation of the roadway as a trail. Was great fun to bike along it and look over the side, heheh.
A bypass tunnel has diverted all vehicular traffic and it is now a scenic walk from small parking lots at both ends.
The tunnel is named for the Hungarian coward who ran from the Soviet Russians during the Hungarian Revolution so he could bring Soviet Marxism to California, Tom Lantos.
Ah yes good old Tom
When my husband Robert, my mother and I went to California we did not get to Big Sur but were heading that way. A fog rolled in and was covering the road so fast we skedaddled back to Morrow Bay. I thought that hwy was quite frightening, myself, though beautiful. It goes so high above the ocean, twisting and turning and looks scary as all get out. Give me those roads on Long Island with the water right next to you!
