It is growing increasingly unlikely that California's state legislature approves Gov. Gavin Newsom's plan to reopen the state's schools for in-person learning anytime soon.
Under the proposal, school districts will receive additional funding if they agree to a firm timetable for reopening schools beginning in mid-February. The proposal was submitted to the state legislature as an adjustment of the state budget and offers additional funding for schools, up to $450 to $750 per student, if they commit to reopening.
Districts across the state have said they will not apply to be part of the program, with some citing concerns over testing costs, while others say teachers unions are refusing to return without robust vaccination plans.
With the legislature appearing stuck and teachers unions doubling down on their vaccination stances, Newsom expressed frustration. A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report from earlier this week states that in-person education can be safe so long as safety protocols such as masks and distancing are implemented.
"If everybody has to be vaccinated, we might as well just tell people the truth: There will be no in-person instruction in the state of California," Newsom said.
He added: “You find whatever you look for. If we want to find reasons not to open, we’ll find plenty of reasons."
Parents across the state have formed a new activist group called "Open Schools California" that hopes to pressure Newsom to fight harder for in-person learning.
“We are seeing governors across the country begin to take decisive action to reopen their schools,” said Megan Bacigalupi, an organizer who has two children attending Oakland’s Crocker Highlands Elementary School. “And the pressure to do so came in part from parents advocating for it.”

Gavin Newsom fire the teachers now
Dreadful but not unexpected. UTLA and other unions are fascist organizations bordering on criminal gangs.
If you look at downtown Sacramento, many, many of the bright, shiny skyscrapers are for the State employees (current and retired); other skyscrapers are for the Teachers, Teacher’s Union, and Teacher’s Retirement System. They own Kalifornia.
At the current pace...the students for this school-year won’t accomplish more than forty-percent of the goal. Shouldn’t the plan just be to call it a total ‘wash’, and restart all the kids in August back at the same grade level?
Gotta love Texas. Thanks to our limited opening of our economy, Gonzaga's first game with fans in the stands occurred in Fort Worth on 12/26. After thumping Virginia, there was a controlled meet and greet with family, friends, and fans.
The only time masks came off were for photos, such as this one with my grandson and Corey Kispert. Corey's parents flew down from Seattle to see the game, it was their first opportunity to see him play live this year.
Paraphrased - "If a student doesn't go to school, he is uninformed. If he does go to school, he is misinformed".
Gavin versus the School Teachers Union. Gavin loses. The irony of it all. The Union isn’t going against what the majority of the Teachers want ( at least here in a cast majority of Kalifornia) Public Teachers in many, maybe most of the cases should be scorned as the Socialist / Marxist that they are.
“vast”
Is there anything Newsom’s done that had any life to it?
Nice!
Democrats know that doing nothing is safer then doing something that causes blame.
Since public “schools” are just really leftist reprogramming facilities, I say KEEP EM CLOSED FOREVER
I am not a fan of Governor Gavin...I do have to agree with his comments...
The teachers' unions, in CA, want to delay reopen schools as long as possible...What is so annoying is that unions will get their way...There is no way Democrats, who control CA, will stand up to them...No way...
Teacher’s unions sure have made our schools great, haven’t they?
