Russia’s state-owned Rostec has announced the development of a new long-range interceptor designated MiG-41 (PAK DP) to replace MiG-31 jets.
MiG-31 fighters first entered service in 1981. It is the first Soviet aircraft of fourth generation.
As per older reports, MiG-41 will be a supersonic, heavy, stealthy interceptor aircraft. Russian defense analyst Vasily Kashin has previously said that the MiG-41 would be considered as a 5++ or 6th generation project. The design of the MiG-41 was reportedly finalized by the end of 2019.
Izvestia has reported earlier that the MiG-41 is envisioned to become an interceptor of hypersonic missiles by carrying a multifunctional long-range interceptor missile system (MPKR DP) that will dispense several sub-missiles in order to increase the chance of intercepting hypersonic weapons. The PAK DP is also intended to carry anti-satellite missiles.

They’ll be able to afford to build 6. Russia is broke.
Russia’s’ Govt debt to GDP is 13%. US Fed.gov's is about 125%
Russia’s 2020 budget deficit was about 3.5% of GDP. The USA’s was 25%
Russia has nearly zero foreign debt. Russia’s current account SURPLUS is about 2% of its GDP (meaning its collecting more money from the world, than it pays out), while USA’s current account DEFICIT is 3.5% of GDP.
America’s bloated Fed.gov and society has the temporary (but very powerful) advantage of having the world’s reserve currency. We are rapidly squandering that advantage.
As to whether Russia or USA goes bankrupt first, I’d unfortunately rather not make a prediction, as people may get upset.
The USSR had basically 0 debt at the end too. Didn’t help them.
“They’ll be able to afford to build 6. Russia is broke.”
I spent a career in the military industrial complex. I followed weapons development and the politics surrounding it as a matter of interest. After years of looking at what Russia says it’s doing compared with how those programs eventually work out, I have a few conclusions. The announcements are partly propaganda, partly advertising and partly trial balloons to see if there are interested parties who might buy the product. Sometimes Russia is implying by a development announcement that they already have other components that the world should worry about. The US and other Western countries often put out articles or press releases to say they have such-and-such capability. Again, there are multiple purposes. Propaganda, looking for sales, and, primarily, to tell the potential opposition, “Hey we have this capability so you should think twice about challenging us.” That’s deterrence.
The reason modern economies end up in wars is, the side that does not want to fight has lost deterrence. Nobody attacks you because you are too strong. They attack because they think they can do it and take something from you. So these announcements serve a valuable purpose.
If Russia was truly strong, it would not be developing doomsday weapons. Their nuclear powered torpedo said to have a warhead around 80 megatons is not something a strong country would develop. It’s what you do when you are so weak you know you can’t defend yourself any other way. Same with Deadman systems that launch all remaining weapons upon losing contact over a specified period with the central command. (Something they have implied they have.)
A bomb of that size exploded in the waters off America’s coast, especially if it is salted to make it a dirty explosion, could potentially kill everyone for hundreds of miles inland.
My real fear is that Russia is so weak that it may collapse and leave those weapons to whoever finds or takes them. The safeties that make it difficult to use only work providing whoever steals them doesn’t have a lot of time and talent on their hands. After the Soviet Union fell a UN inspection team went around to look at each of the remaining weapons. Following a map they found a mobile launcher in the deep forest with its MIRVed warheads sitting abandoned. A little after nightfall the crew returned. They hadn’t received supplies in weeks and they had gone hunting. We are awesomely lucky that none of those weapons found their way onto the black market. Imagine you are literally starving but you have been left alone to guard something worth more money than you would ever see in ten lifetimes.
Russia has come out of its insane statist collectivist period.
The USA is just entering its own.
Russia has an economy about the size of Australia’s. That is why they cannot afford to develop a new fighter.
Not really, USSR was in debt of about $100 billion by 1986, which is a lot for 1980s.
Doesn’t matter what super-duper electronic supersonic flight contrivance they come up with, The LORD GOD will swat them out of the sky like flies and rain all matter of destruction on them whenever His prophetic hook draws them down on Israel. Ka-BOOOMMMM...
Watched FIREFOX about three weeks ago, awesome movie. Saw it with my parents when it first came out in theatres, and I was blown away. One of many of Clint Eastwood’s best works.
Still must replace the engines after operating at full thrust???
The engines are a myth floated by defector Belenko. The speed was largely limited to reduce the wear of the airframe and the rule didn’t apply when the tactical situation required it. There have been a temperature sensor in the fuel tank though, flashing the light to reduce speed in the cockpit.
The above applies to Mig-25 though. It wasn’t really tested for top speed for safety reasons.
