I'm just looking at what happens if Leahy dies:
He is a senator from Vermont, which has a republican governor.
If the republican governor has a spine, he would name a Republican to replace him for the rest of his term.
Then the Republicans would control the Senate for 2 years, and we could rest easy for a while regarding making DC a state, SCOTUS packing, Dominion and cheat-by-mail-in ballots being permanent.

Surprisingly 5 of the last 10 including the current Governor of Vermont has been a Republican. Surely in name only. From 1856 to 1963 only Republicans were elected.

Many of those senators are but Spring chickens, or they were when first elected back in the 19th Century. They’re mostly under 100.
I think this is right...It takes a special election in Vermont...scheduled by the Republican Governor within six months of the vacancy.
