Currently, SpaceX’s Starlink beta internet service offers download speeds of 100 Mbps or so for its beta testers in the U.S., Canada and the UK.
But what about future Starlink download speeds? According to SpaceX director David Goldman, in speaking with the FCC last week, the company outlined its plan to modify Starlink and its future plans, as noted by CNBC reporter Michael Sheetz (via Reddit).
Goldman outlined to the FCC the current 100 Mbps download speeds for Starlink will offer up to 10 Gbps in the future, which is a staggering goal and also much faster than what is currently available from internet service providers.

SpaceX plans to launch 120 satellites each month (essentially two launches of 60 satellites each) and as of his presentation, there were 955 Starlink satellites in orbit, launched from 15 missions.
If we add in the most recent Starlink mission 16 launch (60 satellites), plus the Transporter-1 launch (10 Starlink satellites to polar orbit), that means SpaceX now has sent 1,025 satellites into low-Earth orbit.
What else did SpaceX talk to the FCC about? Sheetz reports, “SpaceX dismissed Amazon’s $AMZN protest of the modification as “attempts to stifle competition”, saying Amazon makes “misleading claims of interference” and emphasizing that the competing Project Kuiper network represents “still nascent plans””.
“SpaceX also emphasized an “ongoing commitment to space safety,” saying its operations are transparent to other satellite operators, implemented automated collision avoidance, and Starlink satellites passively decay (i.e., fall out of orbit) faster due to “higher drag:””, reports Sheetz.

Phone companies should be scared you-know-what-less...I’m not sure many people yet realize that almost overnight this technology can change everything regarding communications.
Not to hijack your post SmokingJoe, I’ve been following Starlink for quite awhile now and had signed up to be a beta tester but I’m too close to civilization to be a viable candidate. Just watch this video yesterday along with part 2 and this guy does a great job talking about the system be it good or bad and it’s very informative. Here’s the link if anyone out in the boonies is interested in seeing what the future is going to offer you this year.

Hope Musk adds free-spech, uncensored search, video and social media alternatives on his network.
Thank you for the link.
And you are not hijacking anything. The more info we can get about this exciting technology, the better.

My cell phone can already call over IP, yeah this will make them obsolete!
The only question mark I see is latency. If they can get latency into at least low double-digit milliseconds, and their promised speed holds true, then Starlink would blow 5G and any other cellular (or cable, DSL, etc.) service out of the water. Plus, the real game-changer here is the potential for ultra high speed internet and voice availability EVERYWHERE. No cell dead spots or garbage signal quality. And it would give you full voice and data at all times while in your car, boat, airplane, etc., no matter where you are. The applications that could be built upon that infrastructure are mind blowing.
We don't want Bezos to do to us the same thng he did to Parler.
A lot of this is going to depend on how well it scales and also on what the upload speed is.
With HughesNet not only is latency a killer for video conferencing but depending on how many users are pulling data through the satellites at any given moment, results are often inconsistent.
I know that the sheer number of satellites Musk is putting up along with the low earth orbit should be helpful with both these issues but will wait for further results and keep my fingers crossed. It would be nice to have normal high-speed again.
My pleasure then. SpaceX just launch the first 10 Starlink satellites into a polar orbit a couple of days ago as the the first phase was completed with the launch of 60 earlier this month. Right now, the 1st phase had an inclination of 53 degrees so anything below 60 North was out of view due to orbital mechanics which excluded much of Alaska from being able to access Starlink. Now, with the start of phase 2 and the populating the polar planes with these comm birds are really going to step up the game and more than likely close those 10 to 15 seconds blackout period due to lack of full coverage. Bezos and Amazon are so far behind Musk at this point it will be a wonder if they continue to even try. Blue Origin is still not operational and the only chance Bezos would have is to try and tie up Musk in the legal system and/or use his influence in D.C. to stifle Musk. Either way, after watching the video, I believe Musk has a winner on his hand and Starlink is the real deal — Cheers!
I can envision a business model where landowners could uplink the Starlink signal to a mini 5g tower and be allowed to resell the signal to neighbors. Or even telecoms installing receiving stations and converting the Starlink signal to IPDSL over shortened distances to provide 100 meg+ internet to subdivisions and apartment complexes.
Think of the filth pornographers and democrats can pump in to our homes.
That is the cool factor...
Screw the anti-freedom Bezos. I'd go back to dialup before using his internet service
Absolutely with those speeds and the latency figures that are being reported make VOIP calls very possible on a par with any Corporate Voip system I’ve ever worked on....and I’ve worked on a couple that were worldwide....
Cell phone companies could be obsolete, certainly the prices would likely plummet for service..
Cable Companies are already feeling the heat from people cutting the cord, that will accelerate to light speed at 10Gb/sec download speeds....
The trend of people moving to more remote areas and smaller towns will continue the downward spiral of major urban cities.....
Like others have said, the potential impact of Starlink is revolutionary...
How long until corporations start hiring mercenaries and go to war with each other?
No kidding! A good Sci-Fi series that deals with the scenario of corporations taking over government is Continuum. It was on Netflix but they dropped it a few years ago along with another series I liked called Fringe. Guess they needed to make room for their new content in which half (or more) of the viewers find distasteful or non-original.
Everybody on the planet will have access...from airplanes to cars/trucks and with speeds unheard of until recently. This will certainly revolutionize the business of communications and I am sure board rooms of AT&T and Verizon etc are humming these days. The part that most don’t get is there is no completion and to even begin a sat project will be out of reach for most companies.
PS...I sold all my AT&T stock recently.
HAHA Bezos can’t even get out of suborbital flights with his new Shepard.. I am not holding my breath
I’m all in favor of more competition - especially if it is opposed by Big Tech. I am for whatever Big Tech is against.
