CHINA and India have held their ninth round of military commander-level talks in a bid to ease border tensions between the two nations.
Tens of thousands of troops on both sides are currently stationed in freezing temperatures around the region of Ladakh in a bitter standoff that has lasted for months. Tensions in the area flared last year after a clash between groups of Indian and Chinese troops left at least 20 soldiers dead in June.
While both sides have placed air and land defences along the boundary that separates them, they have also engaged in peace talks.
Now, Indian media outlets say the ninth round of talks at the military commander level was held on Sunday morning.
It comes after a gap of two and a half months since the last commander-level talks were held in November 2020.

The Chinese would like nothing better than to put a very big, humiliating hurt on India. The point of the lesson would be that if and when China is engaged with the invasion of Taiwan, the Indians should not even think of making trouble on their frontier or attempt to recover lost territory.
Trump: miss me yet.
Astute comment.
There’s also the recurring rumor that India may sell some very nifty medium range missiles to Vietnam.
In a conventional land war (non nuclear) India and China would inflect horrendous death on each others troops. This will not happen.
In a nuclear conflict China would destroy India and India would also take out much of China. This will not happen.
I am confused why China is engaged in these minor border conflicts with India. It makes no sense.
It’s posturing. China wants to remain the undisputed military power in Asia in addition to being the economic superpower and India is the only country big enough to challenge them militarily and economically, to some degree.
The short answer is that there are territorial disputes between the two countries. India feels particularly aggrieved over the territory taken by China in the 1962 border war apparently that land may contain valuable mineral and water deposits. Yet your post begs the bigger perennial question. Why would two advanced cultures wish to sacrifice their young people fighting over such things? Why did Europe really engage in horrific, culturally destuctive wars from 1798 thru 1815 and then again from 1914 thru 1945? Is it nationalism, cultural clashes, economics or does it have something to do with the inherent hard wiring of humans? Whatever the reason its generally not a good idea for any nation’s long term well being to lose such a war.
To step back is to lose “face”. NOTHING is worse than losing face to certain elements of the Chinese ruling class, and it has been like this as long as China has existed.
They will NEVER back down, even if it means bloodshed. It’s the way the leadership is.
... in parking garages, I'll bet.
The "minor squabbles" along the border with India are intended to prevent large-scale conventional land war and the possible escalation to a nuclear conflict.
It's like the father during a long-haul car trip with the family: Are you saying that he should just continue staring at the road, saying nothing, while the kids in the back seat shout and fight? Even when that escalates to them actually giving each other bloody noses or poking each other in the eye?
No. A wise father intercedes early in the conflict, long before the kids starting throwing each other out the window, while it's still petty.
Regards,
Let them destroy their respective cesspool countries. Just do it!
“Who knows what China has put in orbit . . .”
We do. Every single thing they have put up there is well known.
A strange game. The only winning move is not to play. How about a nice game of chess?
One possibility is that India is keeping China off balance at our request.
Another element... India’s male vanity took a hit during the major clash earlier. Border treaty precludes firearms, but hand to hand combat, with PRC troops wielding ten foot, spiked iron bars killed around 20 Indians, with no Chinese deaths reported.
Many reported after-actions, were spun up by Indian propganda as major strategic victories that settled who was who, once and for all, even though no credible reports of Chinese troop participation or casualties seem to have been involved.
I’ll take a smidge from column A, a smidge from column B, and thank our courageous Indian allies for their continuing valor.
Unfortunately with Beijing Joe now in charge the CCP is going to get even more emboldened.
India, China agree to push for early disengagement at disputed border
