Growing number of GOP senators oppose impeachment trial

WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.

House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.

“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

Effing Bingo.

These people nauseate me. I will vote for the likes of Devin Nune, Ted Cruz, and a few others, but the rest are no better than the Leftist pukes.

The Constitution says the Chief Justice shall preside over an impeachment trial. You don’t have the Chief, it’s not a trial, it’s just a show.

Not exactly.

The Chief Justice presiding is the exception case, only when the President is being tried. Otherwise, normal Senate rules apply and the President of the Senate (the Vice President) would preside.

The trial would still proceed without the Chief Justice when someone other than the President is being tried.

The issue here is that Donald Trump is neither the President, Vice President, nor holding an Office of the United States, so he is ineligible to be tried for impeachment.

His removal from office by the Electoral College makes the House's lame-duck impeachment moot.

The temperature in the GOP pot must be rising. Cause some are starting to feel the heat.

I believe it would be best for all concerned to speak with Roberts ahead of time and have him open the impeachment, take a motion or point of order from a GOP Senator that calls into question if the Constitution allows for Impeachment of a US Citizen who is not an officer of the nation. The Roberts should rule that no, that is not constitutional and dismiss the case as being moot.

I doubt that will happen but hey it is a nice idea and would establish a precedent that would work to prevent impeachment of former Presidents, and others such as members of Congress.

They may as well go ahead and do it.

If you have an R after your name, you’re done as a politician. We will never forget or forgive this.

I would just as soon have a dim as a RINO, there is no difference.

There is a BIG difference.

If you are in a red district, defeating the RINO means the party has lost the power of incumbency and will be easily replaced by a true conservative in the next election. The Democrat will be a seat-warmer until then.

When the GOP establishment backs a replacement candidate, you will know who the new RINO is.

It would if they allow him a defense.

Then we would have the spectacle of Harris blocking attempts to prove that Biden/Harris won due to vote fraud.

Of course. It amazes me that so many went half cocked on here. By now, you should know that when something bad happens emotions are heightened. Now that time is passing, reality comes through. Happens everyday.

Why aren’t the ALL opposed? They really should switch parities if they can’t even stick together on something as easy as this.

I would love to have a confidential conversation with Romney in which they would candidly tell me what benefit they think can accrue to themselves, their party, or their country from keeping up this charade and whether they think any harm can come to themselves, party, or country. I’m serious.... I’d need truth serum, but I really don’t understand. “I really really hate Trump” just doesn’t seem compelling enough to actually motivate someone who is even nominally Republican to travel down this road

Only ones mentioned for primary are the ones running in 2026. Seriously! No chat about 2022 at all. We have a few tough seats to win, but everyone is talking 2026 in primarying senate seats. Can’t figure how that helps.

Except by doing this they’re admitting that Trump is the legitimate President.🤔

Has anyone been impeached who has already left?

Plus, they’re seeing a hefty chunk of their base dwindling away....kinda rapidly too.

I send my congressman, who is a Republican, a copy of my old voter registration (R), and my new voter registration (I). I have few difference with his voting in congress, but told him that I would not be voting for him again unless left left the GOP. I am fed up with them. We need to keep the good ones and cut all the RINOs and establishment types. My congressman is General Perry. He is in the freedom caucus. He needs to take one for step to be truly free and that is leave the GOP. The freedom caucus guys are not going to get leadership positions while in the GOP. The establishment will throw them some scraps and that's about it. Just enough to placate them and their voters. I will no longer compromise with these bastards. Compromising just gives use more uniparty socialism.

Did you ever think you would ever see the day where a private citizen could be impeached? Whoa, I better watch my step around Nancy, I too could be impeached.
