WASHINGTON (AP) — A growing number of Republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial, a sign of the dimming chances that former President Donald Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol.
House Democrats, who will walk the impeachment charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening, are hoping that strong Republican denunciations of Trump after the Jan. 6 riot will translate into a conviction and a separate vote to bar Trump from holding office again. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection, and now that Trump’s presidency is over, Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense, as they did during his first impeachment trial last year.
“I think the trial is stupid, I think it’s counterproductive,” said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.. He said that “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions.

Yeah, that’s what I figured. We are just screwed. Every time l think of that hapless idiot Bush calling Clyburn a “savior” by endorsing Biden it makes want to hurl.
Bush calling Clyburn a “savior”
Bush 1 or 2 and when?
Bush 1 died a couple years ago or so.
I know but Clyburn didn’t
I don’t know the timeline of the post I was responding to
So it could have been 1, 2 or even 3.
Maybe I will get an answer, MB knot.
Let this impeachment die with a down vote
Trump can run again
By now, even some RINOs must be getting nervous about two things, the growing concentration of power in the hands of what is essentially a coup-formed government or regime, and the impending doom of the GOP if they go along.
Assuming these are not such evil men (and women) as the coup plotters themselves, there is one way out — the GOP needs to find its resolve and stand up for the republic, and do what they failed to do on January 6th. They need to cast off the odious title of “RINO” (which will soon mean nothing since perfidy will be fully expected of their dying little rump of a party), and take on the mantle of patriots.
It is never too late to do the right thing. And then there would be no need to form a new party, because the old party would have found its conscience and its purpose.
I’ll take whatever award for outrageous misplaced optimism is available.
I guess my question is whether Trump has “given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” Also whether that aid or comfort can be classified as “other High Crimes and Misdemeanors.” I’m not a lawyer either, so hopefully someone hear might offer a more professional opinion.

The person who smashed the head of a Capitol Policeman (who incidentally was a Trump supporter) with a fire extinguisher and killed him, as well as others who caused deaths and injuries, and vandalism to our Capitol.
By that definition, anyone who harbors someone who robs a bank and shoots at the pursuing police are guilty of giving aid and comfort to our enemies.
That phrase is meant to stand alongside treason as a high crime against the nation, such as spying for a foreign nation or acting on their behalf in staging an attack against American forces.
That is not what the few people did at the Capitol building.

We have no idea what kind of mischief Putin and others might be capable of by influencing radical right or left people. In the late 1940s Stalinists infiltrated my father’s insurance workers local. They got payoffs from management, managed to split the union into two separate organizations and destroyed the power of that union.
