Indeed there was a pipeline project to bring Alberta oil to the Maritime provinces so importing oil would no longer be needed. Killed and thus Canada which produces more oil than it uses still imports oil at least to the east coast.
Oil being shipped by train from North Dakota in tank cars resulted in a huge explosion/fire in Lac-Megantic, Quebec back in 2013. The oil was being shipped to Irving Oil in New Brunswick. Several people in a night club in downtown Megantic lost their lives … as a result of the fire/explosion many bodies were never recovered.
