I agree with your argument to a point
The ones that are here, would they go back? Or would they still stay as vagrants? Would churches and groups still support them?
To me, the left was using this as a wedge issue, and it kinda worked for them in 2018
If our side was smart, yes I know, we would have done immigration reform in 2017 that allowed a path to citizen ship to ones who are worthy of it. This would have at least allowed us to keep the working, non criminal ones. Also path to citizen ship includes language classes and learning about American history and culture. <—— This is very important. Dems want them to skip these steps so they can keep them on the plantation.
It is reasonable to expect that they would return to their homelands (Mexico, Guatemala, etc.) - if only we applied enough pressure to them (by more-effectively enforcing existent legislation, but also by, e.g., criminalizing the employment of illegal aliens).
