I don’t know where it stops but I don’t think 75+ million people will be happy if they try to stop Trump from running again. I think Roberts will recognize that and either stop the trial or conduct it in such a matter that it will be obvious there should be no conviction.
While I think the trial will fail, I do expect continued efforts to convict Trump at the state level or at least weaken Trump.
Where are you hearing that BS from? Could you go ahead with a conviction of a dead man that was indicted while he was alive?

It’s as if the news media has already made up its mind that an out of office official can still be held over for an impeachment trial, that is, a done deal with no ability to challenge it.
I’ve gone back and repeatedly read all the articles on impeachment in the US Constitution, and to me it is clearly written to say impeachment has one function:
To remove an office holder.
Former President Trump has a duty to challenge any trial because he is already out of office.
If the Senate formally goes through a trial without resolving this issue then they can do anything.
Will the Court even hear Trump’s argument? They must.
This returns me to my original thought above...
Are the media so sure that Trump won’t challenge or the Supreme’s won’t hear it, or are they purposefully omitting the idea because they’re stupid and want it to happen to what they perceive as a conquered enemy?

I think it would take something like 17 GOP Senators to vote to convict, and it’s highly unlikely they’d get that number.
It’s probably mostly symbolic, just an attempt to keep the crazy Dem narrative going and in the public eye. Eventually, however, I expect them to work on having some state or even federal prosecutor bring charges against him.
I don’t think they realize how much anger they are stirring up. Or maybe they just don’t care, since they think their show of force at the inauguration was enough to terrify the plebes and shut us up.
