Many of our troops have done that. One of my ancestors did that from September until April, coming up from North Africa through Italy and into Germany. He didn't get a bath until April. He said every night machines would come in and dig fox holes where they were to sleep. Some soldiers slept with their arms up out of the foxhole. He said, you had to be there to understand that.
At least they didnt have to sleep in holes filled with filthy water and malaria infested places like the boys had to do in the Pacific.
Like one of my uncles had to. Then have to keep watch during a pitch black night when the Japanese used to do their thing.
Told me that your ears were the most important part of your person because you had to listen very carefully. Couldnt see them until they were nearly on top of you.
