The Puritans mistakenly thought that they'd have communal farming which led to near failure of the colony. It was only after they recognized individual rights that the colony had such a bountiful harvest that they could share it with the nearby Indians.
It was a critical change impacting the founding of this country where individual property ownership led to such a great nation, especially compared the "Tragedy of the Commons" in Europe.
All of the colonies started with communal farming.
To do it any other way was an operational and security error. Individual family farming efforts were established after security was established over larger areas and farming methods and crops were proven in the new environment. It was the same in all of the colonies. The Puritans were also not alone. They settled with other Protestant subgroups.
