Here's who actually determines who gets vaccinated in California

On Wednesday of last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that residents age 65 and above were now eligible to schedule appointments to receive either Pfizer or Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine.

Just one problem: The state does not have final say over who gets vaccinated when. That power rests with individual counties and health care providers.

“We’re not done with our health care workers,” Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said when explaining why her county is not ready to expand eligibility. “We haven’t heard back from the state about vaccine availability and how it would be distributed.”

Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease expert at UCSF, said that while counties and health care providers have final say on who receives the vaccine, they really can only go as fast as the state allows. And announcements that residents age 65 and older can get vaccinated are meaningless without distributing the necessary number of doses.

As of Thursday of last week, California ranked 49th out of 50 states in vaccine usage rate. Onlookers have blamed a multitude of factors including unnecessarily confusing guidelines, bureaucratic delays and a lack of health care workers to administer the vaccine for the state's sluggish pace.

"On Tuesday, [Health and Human Services Secretary] Alex Azar said your supply will be based off of your distribution, so if you distribute all of your doses, we'll give you more," she said. "So it appears there's no getting around that until Jan. 20, because as of now, your ability to distribute determines your future supply."

"I kind of see the point of it; it’s a reward system," Gandhi said. "We’ll give you more vaccines when you’ve given them out. It's not popular with everyone, but it makes sense to me."

Since there the priority list on who gets the vaccine will probably factor in your political correctness (minority , income level, age, etc.)...

If you live in California and don’t want the vaccine when they mandate it, make sure to register as a middle age super white European cracker, racist, xenophobe, arch conservative, Trump supporter, homophobe, filthy rich, meat eater, and a climate change denier.
