Your reference to statehood as “a power grab that caters to the overwhelming welfare/food-stamp dependent class in order to stack congress in favor of Dems.” is what led me to imagine you referred to DC’s black population. In DC, the “welfare/food-stamp dependent class” is overwhelmingly black. However, as the most recent DC Constitution vote of 70+% was taken when the population has become 1/2 white, then the statehood support is more than just black or poor.

As to retrocession to MD, this has been floated by some politicians in both MD and DC. My read on outcome once the public reacted is “it ain’t gonna happen.”

Retro-cession won't happen? It's the honest course to take, the rational course to take. It achieves EXACTLY the outcome argued for statehood. The 'people' should be happy. But they're not... and why not? Because there is more at stake then the representation for the disenfranchised argument. It's all about representation for the power players in congress. aka: an advantage.

The public has been fed a bunch of hype and demagoguery by the political class powers/interests in DC; hypnotized with the dreams and promises of statehood. It's all a sales pitch to get the simpletons on board and deliver statehood to the elites. Get the scheme done and the peasants get 'perks.'

It's all a game.
