Republicans always seem to be playing defense.
The lesson from the 2000 election was that people, not machines need to count the ballots. Instead, people let the politicians waste tax payer money for machines and software that cheats. It's just another way the professional politicians learned to cheat to stay in power. An open and transparent system for counting ballots is required, and a republic requires civic duty. People need to watch and participate in the process.
