(Barf alert) This town actually has a bronze statue of traitor Dalton Trumbo on Main Street.
Comrade Trumbo wrote Johnny Got His Gun (New York: Lippincott, 1939), an antiwar novel published on September 3, 1939, less than two weeks after the Hitler-Stalin Pact and just two days after Hitler launched WWII. The book was heavily promoted in the Communist press. However, when Hitler turned on his ally Stalin in 1941, it mysteriously went out of print. After the US became involved in the war, Trumbo would even inform the FBI about anyone who contacted him seeking a copy of the book--something he actually boasted about.
But like magic, the book reappeared in bookstores after the war as the Soviet Union fell out with the West and became popular among the antiwar crowd during the Vietnam War.
