A strong wind is blowing. They have concluded they are on a sinking ship and are opportunistically acting to jump off. The survival instinct is strong with all humans.
If you want loyalty, get a dog. Humans act 100% in what they perceive to be their own self interest.

I hope they do not participate in any of the usual formalities......just shake the dust off their feet and enjoy the rest of their life....they both well and above earned it.
