Prior to the 17th amendment, Senators represented their state legislatures who appointed them.
Imagine what it would be like today if a GOP state legislature challenged their Electoral College slate after a corrupted election. What would a pre-17th amendment Senator do in this case? Would they be the voice of the legislature in Congress or would they be the party loyalists that they are today?

Same here. Mark is the best sub host, although only Rush can carry 3 hours in the masterful way he does. Steyn occasionally runs out of things to day by the end of the program.
