Russian Sniper Rifles Could Soon Have a Revolutionary Feature

ere's What You Need to Know: The ability to change calibers has been an important consideration for the Russian military.

Few who know firearms would argue that the SVD “Dragnov” is anything but a legendary weapon. When it was paired with the PSO-1 scope and entered service in 1963 it was the most advanced “sniper system” in the world. It was used in countless conflicts and its simplicity ensured that it was able to stick around far longer than competing marksman platforms.

However, all good things must come to an end.

According to a report from Tass, the Russian military has begun state trials for a new semi-automatic sniper rifle to replace the SVDM version of the Dragov, but it would still chambered in the same round.

“Currently, state trials of an upcoming 7.62 mm semi-automatic sniper rifle and optic sights with improved specifications are underway," Ground Forces commander Army Gen. Oleg Salyukov told Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.

Tass didn’t specify which rifle was being tested, however, but last year the Kalashnikov Concern announced that it would begin serial production of the Snaiperskaya Vintovka Chuvakin (SVCh) sniper rifle in 2020. It was also announced that Kalashnikov Concern would be finalizing it as an official replacement for the SVD nearly sixty years after it first entered service. Whether Russia is now hedging its bets with an alternative to the SVCH isn't clear.

Pa-leeze... The SVD wasn’t “all that.” The SVD was at best a 2 moa weapon which made it difficult to reliably hit targets at greater than 600 yards.

I try to never "male" my shotgun but if I did, it would have to be a 2 gauge at a minimum..... :^)

IIRC, the Dragonov was not an exceptoionally accruate rifle. Compared to an AK maybe, with a better long range cartridge.

Are there any Mosin-Nagants extant?

About 20 years ago, readily available - <$100

You are completely within your right to call me a dumbass as I just plunked $800 for a M44 Mosin on gunbroker tonight. It is in excellent condition and I rationalized the purchase for being able to shoot 60cents/rd ammo during this high priced ammo period.

I ignored the Mosins for years... thinking they were a crappy commie gun but.... they are fun to shoot.

Russian sniper doctrine after WWII was closer to what developed in NATO as "Designated Marksman" function. This video describes a bit about the original design, changes the Soviets made, and finally how the Chinese copied it and returned it to very close to its original (most accurate) specs.

Most surprising to me is the ease of use of that optic - and the fact that it had an IR source detection filter that allowed the sniper to see IR emitters out to around 200 yards. In the 1960s.

I am not a sniper by a long shot but reliably hit at 800 meters with it. Also SVD is not a sniper’s but more like marksman’s rifle.

If you reliably hit at 800 yards you are god to me shooting wise

I’m a deer Hunter

On the edwards plateau where I took shots I never shot over 350 at a whitetail standing still with a .243 or .308 or .30-06

In the hills on the tennessee river where I hunt now in Perry county near mouse tail landing....to be precise the PlanetH20 bottle water company artesian well system sits on one of our a leases...3600 acres with up and down 4-700 foot gradient ups and downs

My average shot is 40-80yards and maybe 200 in a dice field ....plowed corn bottom....Lick Creek ....

I see some mighty impressive claims here....

I like Mosins for the old cost..a decent shoulder slammer...they damn kick

But the dragon platform is not impressive to me

I’m a old man now....I want my deer to fall

I used .54 muzzle loader with 565 minie

Or a Rossi breech 35 Whelen with decent glass high is a tack driver ....250 grain core lokt

Deer fall they do t wander off lunged or ventricle hit like with a .243 or 25-06

The big Whelen pushes

I want a number one when I can find one

Man-sized target at range is one thing, deer hunt is another thing.
I know people who hunt with SVD, but don’t like to hang around with a paddle like this.
My favorite game is hare, I hunt them with 5.45x39 16 inch Saiga. Previously with open sight at hares sitting at 70-100 meters. If they run I allowed them to go. Later installed 1-7x25 scope and now snipe them including on the run to up to 170 meters.

We have a Ruger American compact model in that famed caliber we also deer hunti with

Akin to a 30-30 ballistics wise....maybe 10% better performance in the right barrel and twist
Course 30-30 projectile slightly larger

My son has a fancy CCCP scope on it...cheap but it works I hate to say it

It doesn’t auto glass in low light like Austrian or German optics but for the 10% of the price of Zeiss it does. Helluva lot

I’m old a school wooden stock ...bolts......BAR maybe ....but it’s hard to keep glass settled on a BAR any caliber over 7.62

We have a BAR 300WM......can’t keep scope aligned

The 1970 BAR 30-06 I use on occasion is a little better

It’s funny

That CVA 35 is cheap as dookie

But with that Bergera barrel it’s a damn solid rifle
