Anyone who has seen Gary Cooper in Sergeant York will remember Alvin York's fascination when fellow soldier "Pusher" (played by George Tobias) explains to him that subway trains run underground.

Oddly enough, I vaguely recall it. The average doughboy had a pretty good chance of having seen the subway before his AEF unit shipped out to Europe since Europe-bound units departed from three areas, and two of them were part of Greater NYC:
